Deniss Rakeļs (born August 20, 1992 in Jēkabpils ) is a Latvian football player in the position of a striker , who can also be used in the attacking midfield .

Club career

Career start in Jēkabpils

After he began his active career as a football player at his hometown club Jēkabpils RSS , he switched to Jēkabpils SC , the actual successor club of Jēkabpils RSS . There it held him until about 2007, before he moved to the second team of Liepājas Metalurgs at the age of 15 . In the reserve team, which is currently playing (as of 2010) in the second-rate Latvian 1st līga , the young striker was used regularly from 2007 and also regularly scored goals for the team. Among other things, he rose with the team after the completed season 2007 in the second highest Latvian football league. Already at this time the talent of the fast player was recognized and Rakeļs was brought into the professional squad of the club trained by the German Rüdiger Abramczik at the age of 16 . There he finally made his professional league debut on July 4, 2009 in a 6-0 win over SK Blāzma when he came on as a substitute for defender Antons Jemeļins at half-time . His first professional league goal he succeeded in his third championship appearance on August 2, 2009, when he met in the 72nd minute of the 4-0 lead of his team in a 4-1 home win over FK Jūrmala-VV .

In the 2009 game year, a total of 14 league games followed, in which he scored nine goals and prepared another six. He played the two most outstanding games of the season on September 26, 2009, when he scored a hat-trick in his club's 4-0 home win over FC Tranzit , and on October 18, 2009 in a 6-1 win against the Record champion Skonto Riga , in which he played a major role in all six goals of his team, scoring three goals himself and preparing the remaining three. At the end of the season, the team trained by Abramczik was in first place in the table and was five points ahead of their closest rival, FK Ventspils , and six points ahead of Skonto Riga.

Top scorer at Liepājas Metalurgs

After he had already gained his first experience in international club football in July 2009 and had a brief appearance in a qualifying match for the 2009/10 Europa League , he and the team were entitled to become champions in the second qualifying round due to the championship title of the 2009 game year League 2010/11 . There the team had no chance and dropped out of the competition early with a total score of 0: 5 against Sparta Prague ; Rake's was used in both games. In contrast, things went much better for Liepājas Metalurgs within the league and for the young Latvian offensive talent personally. The reigning Latvian champions did everything in their power to defend their title in the 2010 game year , but failed until the end of the season. After he was often used in the position of an attacking midfielder in the preseason, Rakeļs was mainly used as a striker in 2010. He scored a total of 18 goals and three assists in 26 of a total of 27 league games that were possible. Together with the young Brazilian Nathan Júnior Soares de Carvalho , or Nathan Júnior for short , who was hired by the record champions Skonto Riga at the time, Rakeļs became top scorer in the top division of Latvian football this season. However, since Rakeļs scored all of his 18 goals out of the game and the young Brazilian scored three of his 18 goals from penalties, Rakeļs can only claim the top scorer's crown. With the team he only made it to third place in the table and secured a place with the team in the first qualifying round for the 2011/12 Europa League .

The sought-after Latvian offensive talent

During the current 2010 season, Rakeļs received its first offers from various European clubs. In addition to the German club Werder Bremen , who expressed their interest in the young Latvian in August, the Swiss club FC Basel (April 2010) and the Italian club Sampdoria Genua (December 2009) also showed interest in rake's. The latter two clubs even brought the young Latvians over for a trial session or a training camp. Nevertheless, none of the clubs was able to win the young talent for themselves, which is why Rake weiterhins continued to stay with his parent club Liepājas Metalurgs. It was not until January 2011 that he was signed by the Polish first division club Zagłębie Lubin , who awarded him to GKS Katowice for a year in the second division after six months .

National team career

Rakeļs gained his first experience in a national team from his home country in 2007, when he was called up for the first time in the U-16 national team of Latvia. After only a short time in the U-16s, he was called up to the Latvian U-17 national team, in which the young offensive player was mainly in 2008 and was increasingly used. With the team he took part in the qualification for the U-17 European Championship in 2009 . From 2009, he was accepted into the Latvian U-19 team, for which he is still active to date (as of November 2010). With the team he took part in qualifying for the U-19 European Championship in 2010 and subsequently played three international matches in which, however, he remained goalless.

Because of his talent and the services he offered already in play in 2009 and then also in the subsequent game in 2010, Rakeļs was established in June 2010 in the cadre of senior national team of his home country for the Baltic Cup the year 2010 appointed. During the course of the competition, the then only 17-year-old made his debut on June 18, 2010 in a 0-0 draw against Lithuania , when he came on the pitch in the 75th minute for Andrejs Perepļotkins . Already the next day he completed his second international match, when he in also in a 0: 0 draw geendeten game against Estonia in a longer deployment came, it was from the beginning in the square and in the 56th minute through Genādijs Soloņicins was replaced .
