The Hanged Man's Treasure , also known as The Hanged Man's Treasure , is a 1957 American western directed by John Sturges based on a short story by Marvin H. Albert .

action

Former Cold Stream soldier and now US Marshal Jake Wade frees his former partner Clint Hollister from Morganville Prison. You haven't seen each other in years. Back then, Jake was arrested for a bank robbery and murder. Clint released him and wanted to meet with him later. Instead, Jake buried the stolen money and walked away. Jake thinks he has paid his old debt with the release and doesn't tell Clint where the money is. Clint swears vengeance.

Jake returns to Cold Stream, where no one knows anything about his past. He asks his fiancée Peggy what she would think of moving after their wedding. Since Jake hesitates to come up with a proper explanation for his proposal, Peggy is annoyed and sends him home. On the way to his office, Jake is attacked and knocked out by Rennie, a stranger to him. When he comes to, he sees Clint, Rennie, and three of his former gang members, Ortero, Wexler and Burke. Clint explains that he followed him. Now he should take him to the buried loot, otherwise Burke and Rennie would take care of Peggy, who will also accompany the group to the hiding place.

The next morning the group rides into the desert, Jake with his hands tied behind his back. In the evening, Clint tells Peggy about Jake's betrayal of the gang. After the tied Jake fell off his horse the next day, his hands were freed. Jake immediately grabs Wexler's revolver, grabs Peggy and escapes with her into a canyon. But Clint knows Jake's plan and catches them again. That evening, Clint asks Jake to tell his fiancée about his past. During the Civil War Jake and Clint were at a Southern - militia . After the war, they stayed afloat with a few ripoffs. A bank robbery resulted in a shootout in which a young man was caught in gunfire and was fatally wounded. Clint now wants to know where the money is. Jake promises they will reach the destination the next day.

When they encounter a cavalry unit the next day , the commander warns them of attacks by the Comanches . Clint uses Jake's Marshal star and invents a reason for her being here. The officer lets them pass. The men feel queasy because they are entering Indian territory. When Renny shoots coyotes, Wexler is upset because the shot could lead the Indians to them. Jake leads the men to a ghost town that is supposed to be the destination. He spots three Indian scouts. Clint kills the first and pursues the other two. In the abandoned saloon in town, Jake is handcuffed to a chair. Jake secretly asks Ortero to bring Peggy to safety at Cold Stream. At night they hear calls from outside, apparently Indians, who are preparing their attack, so Jake suspects. When the others outside are checking something, Ortero tells Jake that he was not responsible for the young man's death. But Clint let him believe in order to bind him to himself. As the calls from the Indians get louder, Rennie believes that Clint has given up on them and urges them to flee.

Clint shows up as they return to the saloon. Burke becomes hysterical and wants to flee, but is killed by the Indians with a lance. The saloon is surrounded by the Indians and a fight begins. Clint goes outside for a better field of fire. Wexler and Rennie are killed by arrows. Peggy can kill an invading Indian and cut Jake's shackles. The two escape while Clint and Ortero fight the last of the Indians. But again they are caught by Clint.

After Ortero buries the others, Clint finally wants the money. Jake explains the money is in a saddlebag that is buried three feet deep in the cemetery. Jake digs up the saddlebag and pulls out a pistol. Clint believes that after the long time the gun won't work. But when Ortero puts down his gun, Clint does the same. Jake tells Ortero to take Peggy away, which Ortero does. The two ride away. Have Clint throw away his gun. When he does that, Jake runs back to the ghost town. Clint pursues him and is shot by Jake. Ortero and Peggy hear the gunshots and return to Jake.

background

The desert sequences were filmed in Death Valley , California. Robert Taylor and Richard Widmark were considered western giants at the time; however, this is the only film in which they stood together in front of the camera.

Director John Sturges, a specialist in the genre, said: “Letting the characters think - that's tension for me. In the westerns that I mean, it's not so much about traditional 'action' and not about the hero fighting each other non-stop, too much passion destroys the latent power. "

Reviews

For the lexicon of international films , The Hanged Man's Treasure was a "[p] sychological western that uses two character portraits to show the conflict between civilization and lawlessness at the time of the American conquest". Prisma judged similarly : "A brilliantly played, psychological western by John Sturges, who found Richard Widmark and Robert Taylor as a terrific pair of opposites for his directorial work."
