occupation

The Dead on the Beach is a crime film by director Martin Enlen from 2006. The literary film adaptation is based on the novel Rosa's Return by the writer Barbara Krohn . In the main role , Silke Bodenbender embodies the daughter Rosa of the patriarchal father Friedrich Liebmann ( Hans Peter Hallwachs ), who emigrates to the USA at a young age and only returns to Germany when her father turns 70.

action

At a young age, Rosa, like her siblings, suffers from the pressure and humiliation of her father, who has hardly any friends because he is particularly domineering. When she could no longer withstand this pressure, she emigrated to the USA in order to finally start a new life, freed from all unsightly memories from her childhood.

As the day approaches after more than a decade on which her father will celebrate his 70th birthday, she decides to come back to Germany and talk to him about all her experiences with him. Furthermore, she has in mind to finally be able to make peace with him and forget all the humiliations that happened to her on his part.

However, it turns out differently: When she arrived in Germany, Rosa found her father dead, he was sitting lifeless in a beach chair, a bullet hit him in the heart and he was shot. All of a sudden, Rosa suddenly realized all the wrongdoings her father committed in his life, and not just against his own children. For example, a father who drowns a cat in front of his daughter or sends his son a notice, forcing his other daughter to abort and calling his sons-in-law all “washcloths”, such a person will likely have more enemies than friends in the course of his life and it seems clear that, given the circumstances, the killer must come from the family.

Initially, Rosa is also under suspicion. It also turns out that the father had a relationship with Liselotte Petersen, with whom he always met on Saturdays. The mother, in turn, has a secret relationship with the driving instructor Carl. On the day of the crime, Carl was also out on the beach and saw Ole shot his father-in-law in a scuffle. Through a letter from Rosa the day before, he had learned that his wife Regina had been forced to have an abortion by her father 15 years ago, as a result of which their marriage remained childless. Ole drew the wrong conclusions from this and shot Friedrich Liebmann. When he is determined to be the perpetrator, Ole storms home to Regina and takes the murder weapon from its hiding place. Rosa arrives and tries to protect her sister by stating that Ole killed himself. Regina, however, admits this act and is taken away.
