The big canton is a satirical - documentary film by Viktor Giacobbo . It was released in theaters on May 16 in Switzerland and on July 16, 2014 in Germany.
The plot of the film is based on the discussion of the idea of joining the Federal Republic of Germany as the 27th canton to the Swiss Confederation . Historical and current facts form the framework in which 26 prominent personalities from Switzerland and Germany comment on this idea.
The following names are suggested for the new canton in the film:
- Tütschino : A suitcase word from “tütsch” ( Swiss German for “German”) and “Ticino” (Italian for “ Ticino ”), which is probably also aimed at the otherness of the canton of Ticino with its official language, Italian and its southern location, to that of the "Big Canton" would form the opposite pole.
- Mercedes : Should define the strength of the German automobile manufacturer as the core of the cantonal identity.
- Prolothurn : A suitcase word from “ Prolo ” and “ Solothurn ”, which aims at the, according to the cliché, occasionally loud and rowdy characters of the Germans compared to the Swiss. The relation to the canton of Solothurn remains unclear.
- Valhalla .
Regardless of the aforementioned film, the term large canton is also generally used in Switzerland as a joke term for Germany.
