action

scenario

The action takes place in 2027 and revolves around the player character Ben Saxon, an augmented mercenary who previously served with the British special unit SAS . The game is based on the novel Deus Ex: Icarus Effect by author James Swallow, which was published in 2011 to accompany Deus Ex: Human Revolution .

Course of action

After their defection from the security company Belltower and the arguments with their mercenary troops of the Tyrants around Jaron Namir (plot of the novel Icarus Effect ), Ben Saxon and Anna Kelso hide in a shelter on Costa Rica. Both suffer from withdrawal from the drug Neuropozyne, both of which need to prevent their bodies from rejecting their body implants (augmentations). However, global shortages make it difficult to access the drug. On the recommendation of a mysterious person named Janus, Saxon travels to Panama City to acquire new neuropocyne. There he found out about a new drug called Riezene, which is being sold on the black market as an alternative to Neuropozyne. When Saxon is looking for the source of the drug, he comes across the machinations of his former employer Belltower, who is conducting a broad, illegal test of the drug on people on the black market for the manufacturer of the drug - Zaaphire Biotech.

With the help of the renegade Belltower pilot Alex Vega, Saxon tries to enlighten the World Health Organization about the machinations of Belltower, but when he meets the inspector, he is killed by a Tyrant member. The killer turns out to be Sam Duarte, a friend of Saxon's long believed to be dead, whose apparent killing in the Australian Civil War led to Saxon's hiring at Belltower in the first place. Duarte misses killing Saxon too, so that he can escape. Together with Alex Vega, Saxon makes his way to the headquarters of Zaaphire Biotech in the Australian capital Canberra .

In the end credits of the game, Jaron Namir and Sam Duarte apologize to their superior for the missed killing of Saxon and promise to make up for this failure. The game ends with a "to be continued" (Engl. For To be continued ).

development

The game was produced by Eidos Montreal and N-Fusion . The Deus Ex: Human Revolution development team at Eidos Montreal, including Game Director Jean-François Dugas , developed the original concept and then worked on the program in cooperation with the N-Fusion development team. The game uses the Unity engine .

In March 2013 it was announced that Square Enix had secured the trademark rights "Deus Ex: The Fall" and registered corresponding Internet domain names. In early June 2013, Human Revolution developer Eidos Montreal published a message on its official Twitter channel referring to the game, which was later followed by a teaser trailer confirming the title. On June 5, Square Enix announced that Deus Ex: The Fall would be released for iOS in the summer and an Android version would follow later. Square Enix presented the game to the press in detail that same month at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2013 game fair , and the first film and image material was also published in this context. In early July, Square Enix announced July 11, 2013 as the official release date for the iOS version.

After several postponements, the Android version of the game was released on January 22, 2014. In February 2014, Square Enix also announced a porting to Windows computers on March 25, 2014 via the online distribution platform Steam . Compared to the mobile version, some adjustments have been made, for example in the graphics options ( screen resolution , VSync , anti-aliasing ), the controls and the AI . The options for in-app purchases, however, have been removed. On March 10, the date was brought forward by one week to March 18, 2014.

Carsten Görig from Spiegel referred in his article This iPad game is so good that it hurts due to a discrepancy between the game and the gaming device. He described Deus Ex: The Fall as a "good and exciting game" that appeared on the wrong platform. It is not as complex as Deus Ex: Human Revolution , but exciting enough to "keep the player engaged". The graphics are also close to the model, only the facial animations looked a bit wooden. The controls are quite effortless. However, after half an hour playing on the tablet proves to be uncomfortable and causes increasing pain:

"The Fall" exposes one of the life lies of the iPad: It is not a game console, even if it is used as such by many games and gamers. It's just not ergonomically shaped. At least when you have to use two hands all the time. "

- Carsten Görig : The mirror

“Graphically and playfully, The Fall is beyond almost any doubt. Only lead addicted thugs should scare off the hectic and unfair shootings. But Deus Ex was never an action game anyway. "

- Tobias Kuehnlein : Gbase

“The Fall makes the biggest mistake, however, in the desperate attempt to transport the complex rules of the game from Human Revolution onto the touchscreen without any noteworthy compromises: What is self-explanatory, intuitive and natural on the gamepad seems to be nested and cerebral here. [...] However, if you are ready to take on the fight against the fiddly controls, you will discover, among all the quirks, an at least extensive and unusually profound touchscreen adventure with an interestingly written story that never gets boring and was set to music in first-class English.

- Robert Bannert : Netzwelt

A program bug that only occurred on devices that had been jailbroken unlocked was controversial . On these devices, the program refused to fire firearms during the fighting. This problem was eventually resolved with an update.
