At the diplomatic level, German-Jamaican relations have existed since Jamaica's independence in 1962. They are described by the Foreign Office as "friendly and problem-free, if not particularly intensive".

Germany has an embassy in Kingston , Jamaica has an embassy in Berlin . There are also honorary consulates of Jamaica in Dallgow-Döberitz (for Brandenburg, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia), in Hamburg (for Hamburg, Bremen, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein) and from 1976 to 2006, and again from 2010 in Munich (for Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg).

History and politics

In 1967, Federal Council President Lemke (for Federal President Lübke) received Clifford Campbell, Governor General of Jamaica.

After the abolition of slavery, ordered by the colonial power of Great Britain, there was a labor shortage in Jamaica, which is why German workers were recruited. Over a thousand immigrants then migrated from Germany to Jamaica and lived in the German settlement founded in Seaford Town in Saint James Parish in 1835 .

On February 14, 1986 in Kingston the agreement between the government of the Federal Republic of Germany and the government of Jamaica on financial cooperation was concluded ( Federal Law Gazette II p. 621 ). After the income situation in Jamaica had improved, development cooperation, which until then had totaled 255 million euros, was ended in 2003. In the context of EU grants, however, Germany continues to make the highest contribution among the member states of the European Union with a share of around 20 percent.

To promote social awareness of human rights in Jamaica, the Federal Republic of Germany, represented by the then German ambassador Josef Beck , signed a grant agreement with the Jamaican human rights organization Jamaicans for Justice , represented by its chairman Susan Goffe and director Carolyn Gomes , on April 12, 2012 for the project "Human Rights Awareness Marketing and Promotionals Campaign", in which Germany contributed with a grant of 62,000 dollars.

Education and cultural exchange

In 1966 the Jamaican German Society was founded with its seat in Kingston . The organization receives funding from the Federal Foreign Office and works with the German embassy in the cultural field. It also offers German courses, the qualifications of which are recognized by the Goethe Institute.

The non-profit German-Jamaican Society has existed since 1976 with the aim of deepening the relationship between the Federal Republic of Germany and Jamaica. There is also the Jamaican German Cultural Center in Montego Bay .

The traveling exhibition “Germany for Beginners”, initiated in 2009 by the Federal Agency for Civic Education and the Goethe Institute , was on view from September 14 to 23, 2011 at the University of the West Indies in Kingston.

Reggae in Germany

German musicians like Seeed , Gentleman , Patrice , Peter Fox , Jan Delay , Ayọ , Nosliw and Dr. Ring-Ding are successful in Germany with reggae music and related varieties from Jamaica, which is rooted in the local culture . The first German reaggae festival, Summerjam , took place for the first time in 1986 in Cologne.

Some Jamaican musicians such as Sizzla , Elephant Man , Shabba Ranks , Vybz Kartel , Bounty Killer and Capleton , repeatedly caused controversy in Germany because of homophobic statements and Battyman tunes .

economy

On May 29, 1996, the German-Jamaican Investment Protection and Promotion Agreement came into force. In 2013, Germany imported goods and services to the value of 76.307 million euros from Jamaica. These included in particular clay and bauxite . The imports of Jamaica from Germany in the same year amounted to about 33.3 million euros and mainly comprised vehicles, pharmaceuticals and machines.

German tourists are a constant economic factor in Jamaica. Measured against the total share of tourists in Jamaica, Germany was once again fourth as the country of origin with 21,346 visitors in 2014. The Spanish hotel chain RIU Hotels & Resorts with German participation is making higher investments in Jamaica .
