The German Bicycle Prize - best for bike
The German Bicycle Prize - best for bike is a nationwide competition that has been honoring projects and measures to promote cycling every year since 2000 . The initiators of the competition are the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) and the working group for pedestrian and bicycle-friendly cities, municipalities and districts in North Rhine-Westphalia (AGFS). The Zweirad-Industrie-Verband (ZIV) and the Service and Bicycle Association (VSF) support the competition as partners.
Categories
The German Bicycle Prize is awarded in the categories "The most bicycle-friendly decision" and "The most bicycle-friendly personality".
The most bike-friendly decision
Since 2015, three prizes have been awarded in the category “The most bicycle-friendly decision”: “Infrastructure” , “Service” and “Communication” . The three new categories are based on the principle of "bicycle traffic as a system" and thus do justice to the increasing variety of topics in bicycle traffic promotion. They replace the old categories of “everyday mobility” and “leisure / tourism”, which, however, are also thematically taken into account with the new categories.
The three prizes in the “The most bicycle-friendly decision” category are awarded to projects and measures that promote, simplify or support cycling in everyday life, on the way to school, shopping, work or leisure. For example, technical innovations, structural measures, outstanding commitment of individuals, events, services, bicycle-specific discounts or communication measures are honored. Public and private institutions, individuals, groups and associations can apply for this part of the competition.
The prizes for “Infrastructure”, “Service” and “Communication” are each endowed with 6,000 euros, with the winners receiving 3,000 euros, and are awarded by an expert jury.
The most bike-friendly personality
“The most cyclist-friendly personality” is an opinion-forming person who acknowledges himself as a cyclist in public and thus enhances the image of this means of transport in a special way. As a public figure, the award winner helps to motivate the general public to ride a bike.
Video and photo competition
Every year since 2012, the most beautiful bicycle photos have been honored with a selected motto in the photo competition of the German Bicycle Prize. Since 2020, the best submitted videos, songs, texts or works of art have also been awarded a prize.
