The German Fundraising Association e. V. ( DFRV ) is a non-profit professional association for full-time and voluntary fundraisers , non-profit organizations , service providers in the fundraising area , representatives from science and research as well as all people who campaign for a “culture of giving” in Germany.

The association is the second largest association of its kind in Europe at national level; The regional, national and international exchange of information in the fundraising area and the development of national and international standards in questions of fundraising ethics are promoted .

history

The association was founded on February 27, 1993 in Frankfurt am Main under the name Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft Sozialmarketing (BSM) eV as a professional association of fundraisers. The starting point was the annual regional meeting of the German participants in the International Fundraising Workshop in Noordwijkerhout, the Netherlands. Following his example, the first German Fundraising Congress took place on October 6th and 7th, 1993 with 70 participants in Schmitten im Taunus . The congress, which regularly takes place annually in Kassel, took place in early May for the 26th time with more than 800 participants. The event is considered by experts as the most renowned industry meeting in the German-speaking area and is the largest of its kind there.

On September 26, 2003, the association changed its name to Deutscher Fundraising Verband eV. In 2009, the association moved from its previous headquarters in Frankfurt am Main to Berlin . In November 2011, the general assembly transformed the previous professional association with personal memberships into a non-profit professional association that can also accept legal persons as members.

purpose

According to the statutes, the purpose of the association is to promote science and research, public and vocational training, consumer advice and consumer protection, as well as civic engagement for charitable, charitable and church purposes in the field of fundraising. The purpose is fulfilled through funding

  • ethical principles and quality standards in fundraising,
  • the reputation of fundraising in Germany,
  • of scientific research and documentation,
  • basic and advanced training and the exchange of experience between fundraisers,
  • dialogue with politics, administration and the public with the aim of influencing public opinion and legislation as far as it relates to the third sector and the common good .

The work of the association is recognized as charitable because of the promotion of science and education, the promotion of consumer protection and the promotion of civic engagement .

activities

Seven specialist groups are dedicated to the exchange of experiences and further education and training: education, digital fundraising, women, health care, church, culture and politics. Some specialist groups organize specialist days on a regular basis : Every year from 2001 to 2013, the “kollekta” brought together experts from the church fundraising sector; the “FrauenFRforum”, formerly “Fundraiser Day”, took place for the first time in 1996 and is reserved for female fundraisers to exchange experiences. There are other specialist conferences on the topics of fundraising in the health sector, cultural fundraising and fundraising for the education sector.

Two specialist committees (ethics and law) are dedicated to specific fundraising issues. The ethics committee formulated the basic ethical rules of the association, first adopted in 2001 by the general assembly, and a charter of donor rights approved by the general assembly in 2012 with a majority . The IT technical committee developed checklists for standards for electronic data processing (EDP) for non-profit organizations and supported fundraisers and organizations with the SEPA conversion. His work has now been successfully completed.

With regular meetings, 21 regional groups offer a platform for exchanging experiences, to which guests are also invited. The first were founded by Christoph Brocks as early as 1993 under the name “Fundraising Stammtische”.

The promotion of education and training has been the focus of the association's activities from the start. Prepared by Hans-Jürgen Holzhauer and Matthias Krieger, the Fundraising Academy was set up in Frankfurt am Main in November 1999 on the initiative of Marita Haibach , Lothar Schulz and Holger Tremel , and has since influenced all curricula in the area of ​​fundraising for good causes. Employee and managing director is Thomas Kreuzer . Organized as a non-profit company with limited liability, it has been supported since the beginning by the joint venture of Evangelical Journalism , the German Fundraising Association and the German Donation Council .

The highest organ of the association is the general assembly. It appoints an arbitration commission that decides on violations of the members against the basic rules for good ethical fundraising practice and can propose sanctions to the board.

At the general meeting on May 3, 2017, Martin Dodenhoeft in Kassel was re-elected as chairman of the DFRV. Dodenhoeft had been head of the communication and marketing department in the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge since 1999 . Susanne Wohmann , Team Leader Fundraising at Amnesty International Germany , was elected as Deputy Chairwoman . The membership re-elected Reinhard Greulich , fundraiser at the Foundation for the Preservation of Church Monuments, as treasurer . The team completed Astrid of Soosten ( European Molecular Biology Laboratory ), Miriam Wagner Long (Agency Zielgenau) and Gerhard Meyer Wall (Wall Meyer NGO Compass) countries as observers to the Board.

A new board was elected on May 8, 2019. New CEO was Martin Georgi and with previous experience. a. as board member of Aktion Mensch , director of the Christoffel-Blindenmission and managing director of Amnesty International Germany. Manuela Ewert , who also has many years of experience in the third sector , became the new deputy chairwoman . The offices of treasurer and assessors were confirmed with the previous appointments.

A “future workshop” dealt with questions of the future organization and the main areas of work of the association by resolution of the general assembly on April 4, 2013.

Ethics and transparency

With the membership application, each member undertakes to adhere to the “basic rules for good, ethical fundraising practice”. Members are also required to observe the “Charter of Donor Rights” adopted by the association. Members also have to pay an annual fee, the amount of which is calculated based on the income from voluntary donations. Members have the right to advertise their membership for donations by e.g. B. display the DFRV ethics seal on your website.

At the international level, the association is subject to the International Statement of Ethical Principles drawn up by 30 fundraising organizations in 2006 .

German fundraising award

Since 1999 the association has honored special achievements in non-profit marketing with the German Fundraising Prize. It is the most important award in the industry. One category is the award for special merits and outstanding personal commitment.

The association is a member or partner of the European Fundraising Association (EFA), the Resource Alliance, the German Dialog Marketing Association (DDV) , the Transparent Civil Society Initiative , the Alliance for Charity, the Federal Network for Citizenship (BBE) , the Federal Association of German Foundations , the German Society for Association Management , the German Association for Inheritance Law and Asset Succession . The association has an 18 percent stake in the Fundraising Akademie gGmbH.
