Devyn Ariel Tyler (* around 1991 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) is an American film and stage actress and former child actress . She first gained international fame in 2007 for her role as Helen Farmer in The Great Debaters .

life and career

Tyler was born in New Orleans, the largest city in the US state Louisiana, to Deneen and Kevin Tyler, and spent much of her childhood here. In New Orleans, among other places, she was trained in various dance styles at the Lusher Alternative Elementary School by Kathy DeJean, a trained dancer. Before that, she attended a Montessori elementary school before moving to Lusher Middle School . Shortly after she started at Benjamin Franklin High School in New Orleans, she had to leave home because of Katrina and settled with her family in Houston , Texas . While she was still living in New Orleans, she was first used in larger and more well-known and film productions. She had her first relevant role in the film Jordan Superstar , published in 2004, alongside Danielle Panabaker , Brenda Song or Taran Killam . Before that, she was in lesser-known productions, including On With the Show on Bravo TV / Cox Channel , In Dreams by Morrison Productions , Partners for Healthy Babies by the Gallinghouse Group and the Disney production Life Bites .

A year later she was seen in Another Disney Channel Original Movie , The Greatest Magician in the World , in a minor role alongside Aly Michalka , Johnny Pacar and Frank Langella . In the German-language dubbed version, Esra Vural lent her the voice. Another year later she was on the cast of James Gartner's Game to Win , in the lead role with Josh Lucas as basketball coach Don Haskins . In Houston she finally attended the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts , where she appeared for the school theater group in the plays A Midsummer Night's Dream (as Hermia ) and Ladies of the Jury (as Evelyn Snow ).

In 2007 she played the role of Helen Farmer , daughter of James Farmer senior (played by Forest Whitaker ) and Pearl Farmer ( Kimberly Elise ) in The Great Debaters , and had her first major role in a film production. The following year, 2008, she was seen in the role of Queenie's (played by Taraji P. Henson ) 14-year-old daughter in David Fincher's three - time Oscar-winning The Strange Case of Benjamin Button . After receiving a scholarship from the National YoungArts Foundation , which she graduated from in 2009 as an alumni, and as part of the Presidential Scholars Program in 2009, she began studying at Columbia University . There she chose “French and Francophone Studies” as her main course, although she already had “French” at high school.
