Diabolus in Musica is the seventh studio album by the thrash metal band Slayer . It was released on June 9, 1998 by American Recordings . The album was produced by Rick Rubin and recorded at Oceanway Studios in Los Angeles . The album reached number 31 on the US charts.

History of origin

As always, the album was produced by American Records label boss and star producer Rick Rubin . The recordings took place at Oceanway Studios in Los Angeles .

The album marked the return of Paul Bostaph , who quit after Divine Intervention to continue his solo project The Truth About Seafood . In time for the recordings, he returned to Slayer after he was replaced by Jon Dette of Testament after the recordings for the album Undisputed Attitude . In retrospect, Paul Bostaph called the album his favorite work with Slayer, as the group was more experimental than ever before.

The album title is an outdated term for the tritone .

Music genre

Band lettering on Diabolus in Musica

Much of the guitar riffs were written by Jeff Hanneman . Hanneman made use of some elements of Nu Metal , which modernized the sound of the band, but still stuck to Thrash Metal. In particular, Slayer worked less aggressively and quickly on this album, but placed more emphasis on groove .

This led to indignation among fans from the very beginning. The modernized band logo on the album cover was also controversial. The new band logo no longer contained a sig rune and showed the letters individually instead of building on one another. The album is now regarded as a "rather unimportant album in the Slayer catalog".

Song info

During the recording of the album, Tom Araya had problems with Christianity for the first time . Araya was irritated by the text to In the Name of God , which Kerry King had written. The song contains the line of text “Antichrist is the name of God”, which pissed him off.
