Reviews

The film received negative, sometimes disastrous reviews.

In Great Britain in particular, the film was panned with heavy criticism and malice. In The Guardian, for example, it was said that the princess had "died a cruel death for the second time" as a result of the film. The Daily Beast described the film as "boring", and it also said that Diana would be portrayed as a "romantic victim". In an interview, director Hirschbiegel described the harsh criticism of his film in the UK as mostly "polemical, unfair and unfounded in terms of content".

The film was only moderately received by the international audience: In the IMDb , users rated the film with an average of 5.5 out of 10 possible points. The Rotten Tomatoes site counted only 8 generally positive (8%) of 95 reviews. In summary, it says: "Naomi Watts tries to play the lead, but 'Diana' buries her attempt under a bad script and clumsy direction."

The German-speaking critics saw it similarly: Sonja Hartl from Spielfilm.de wrote: “ Diana is a pompous love film with a pseudo-critical touch, in which only the main actress is convincing.” According to TV Spielfilm , the film fluctuates “between respectful approach and clichéd transfiguration”. He was "worth seeing just because of Naomi Watts". On web.de it was said: “The result is a teardrop of the worst kind, which never does justice to its protagonist and which Diana can unfortunately no longer defend herself against.” It was also possible to read that the film was “less of a classic biography than something like that -could-it-have-theoretically-been-romance in which Diana often enough appears in her search for real life as a peasant-smart stupid at best ”.
