The Peppercorns and the Curse of the Black King is a German film that was released on September 7, 2017. The film is the first and so far only adaptation of the children's and youth television series Die Pfefferkörner for the cinema, which has been running since 2000 . In this film, which was released shortly before the 14th season aired , four of the five peppercorns in Group 9 Mia, Alice, Johannes and Benny are the main characters. Another leading actor is Luca, who only appears in the film, but not in the series. The film was shown for the first time on television on October 29, 2019 on Das Erste .
In addition to Hamburg , the film is also set in South Tyrol . In the 14th season Lisha joins the other peppercorns.

In the film (as well as later in the 14th season of the series) it is not shown how the peppercorns of the 8th group Stella, Ramin, Pinja, Till and Jale are replaced by the new ones.
At the beginning of the film a chase is shown in which Mia, Alice and Benny are already the peppercorns and are also referred to as such by the police. The rest of the film's plot is detached from this chase.
A school trip to South Tyrol is planned for Benny and Mia's class. The goal is the farm where Luca Gruber is at home. Since you already know Luca elsewhere, you skype with him beforehand. He warns them to come, but does not specify what this warning is based on. The two of them are not put off by the warning and participate as planned.
However, the class trip almost canceled because the teacher who was supposed to go with us fell ill. Since Benny's mother steps in as a female companion, it can take place. Immediately before the trip, Johannes joins the class as a new student. It stands out from the fact that it is brought by a chauffeur. In addition, there is a rumor among the students that he should have beaten other students in his previous class.
When the class arrives in South Tyrol, Luca is not enthusiastic about their arrival. In fact, two incidents soon occur: the water from a spring rim turns black. There is also the sign of the black king . During the night there is a fire in an animal stable.
Luca tells the others about strange voices and lights in an old tunnel. When the class goes on a mountain hike the next day, he accompanies them. Benny, Mia and he then step away from the class and inquire about this gallery. But they flee when the apparitions reappear.
Back at the farm, Lucas's father is being arrested for the fire. Johannes, of all people, who had not taken part in the mountain hike because he wanted to look around the courtyard, had given the police a tip that he had seen Lucas' father drive away a whole box of empty bottles of fire accelerator. He had previously discovered film clips that showed Luca's father arguing with someone. The others are so horrified by Johannes' report to the police that they no longer speak to him. Later Johannes disappears.
Benny as a computer freak finds out that Johannes has in the meantime called up various newspaper articles on the Internet about a Levartis company. The head office of this company is in Hamburg. Therefore they instruct Alice to look around the headquarters. He succeeds in taking photos of the plans for a water filling plant. The four find out that the company wants to sell water at a high price.
When Luca tells his uncle Lorenz, his father's brother, of his discovery, he goes with him to the old tunnel, where he surprisingly locks Luca up.
Benny and Mia take a cable car up to their mountain station. There they succeed in listening to the owner of this company, Levartis, talking to the local mayor about the building permit for this water bottling plant.
It turns out that the sale of land from the Gruber-Hof is essential for the plant. Uncle Lorenz is one of the conspirators and assumes that Luca's father will be willing to sell as a result of the process. The mayor no longer supports the facility because he has now received an expert report on the threat of environmental damage.
At this point Benny and Mia's wiretapping is discovered. You can escape first. In the end, however, they run into the owner of Levartis, who forces her to give her the laptop with the records. Finally they are brought back to the Gruber-Hof by the police.
In the meantime, Luca has found out in the tunnel that the apparitions were created artificially in order to scare off curious people. Together with Johannes, who is also held captive in the tunnel, they discover an underground lake and can then escape through the mountains. They arrive at the Gruber-Hof exactly when the police who brought Benny and Mia are about to leave. Because of her testimony, Uncle Lorenz is arrested.
However, this does not determine the innocence of Luca's father. In addition, the insurance refuses to pay for the fire damage.
To clarify that, they would need Benny's laptop, which they locate in Hamburg, at the Levartis headquarters. John explains to the others that in his previous class he was only defending himself against the others. The classmates at the time attacked him because he wanted to report that they were blackmailing others.
He offers the peppercorns to fly to Hamburg on his parents' private jet and get the laptop from the corporate headquarters there. They can do this with joint efforts.
Since the presentation of the new water is taking place, they are playing the recording from the mountain station there over loudspeakers. The company owner is arrested. When the four of them return to South Tyrol, Lucas' father has just returned from prison.
Locations
The filming locations were the Fanes plateau and the Great Lagazuoi . In reality, the latter mountain no longer belongs to South Tyrol , but to the province of Belluno further south . The Lavarellahütte , located on the Fanes, embodies the Gruber-Hof in the film.

In 2019 a sequel was filmed with the title The Peppercorns and the Treasure of the Deep Sea , in which a new generation is introduced.
