action

Martin, the owner of the Haflinger stud, has won the shooting competition for the third time. According to old custom, he is allowed to choose his “queen” from the village beauties present at the subsequent celebration. The choice falls on Liesl, the dairymaid from St. Kathrein. But this doesn't suit the landlord's daughter Johanna at all, as she has her own eye on the handsome landowner. Out of jealousy, she makes such a scene for the humble Liesl that she leaves the party without a word. The next day, Martin meets Liesl again on his way to the Alm . The girl lives up there with old Hiasl and the shepherd boy Hansl. Martin and Liesl soon confess their love for each other, and the engagement is not long in coming.

One day, Liesl's brother Franz, who had committed criminal offenses, suddenly appears in the alpine hut. Because Liesl has been disappointed by him so often, she initially wants to refuse him accommodation, but is finally persuaded to let him stay with her temporarily.

The news quickly spread in the village that Liesl is accommodating a lover in her hut. The landlord's daughter started this rumor and she knows how to always give him new food. Even Martin is beginning to doubt that his fiancée is loyal to him. When he is on the prowl once again , he hears a shot, which leads him to suspect that a poacher is up to mischief nearby . He investigates the matter and finds the seriously injured Franz in a crevice. On the run from his pursuers, Loisl the hunter and his assistants, he fell into the crevice. Martin brings the seriously injured man to the Sennhütte. In doing so, he hears Franz declaring in delirium that he is fond of Liesl. It is now clear to Martin that his bride is cheating on him with someone else; he breaks the engagement. The scheming Johanna was just waiting for this; now she feels very close to her goal.

However, it turns out differently than the landlord's daughter imagined. Martin learns that Franz is actually Liesl's brother. His only suppressed love for the girl reawakens. He asks her to part with her criminal brother. Liesl defiantly declares that he will not be able to leave Franz in the lurch. But he cannot stop poaching and indulges in the forbidden hunting again immediately after his recovery. After an adventurous pursuit, the gendarmes finally succeed in catching the perpetrator and arresting him.

Martin, however, leads his Liesl to the altar with a large number of the villagers.

Production and Background

In this classic Heimatfilm, as in the previous film Der Förster vom Silberwald , the dream couple Anita Gutwell and Rudolf Lenz are cast in the leading roles. The film was produced in the Salzburg-Parsch studio. The outdoor shots were taken in the Salzburg region (including Faistenau , Kolm-Saigurn ) and in East Tyrol. They were shot by a second camera team under the direction of Karl Stanzl and the camera work of Sepp Riff .

Carl Loubé composed the music for the film . The songs can be heard:

  • Where the chamois leap cheerfully with yodelling and the final movement ... that's the dairymaid from St. Kathrein after every stanza,
  • Just don't be sad
  • I'm just a funny farmer's boy
  • When I look at the critters ,
all based on texts by Hanns Haller. Another song
  • Heimatland, A Bacherl - a reines, a Kircherl - a kleine - also written by Haller - contributed the Viennese composer Anton Karas , who had also taken on the role of the village teacher in the film.

The buildings were designed by the film architect Fritz Jüptner-Jonstorff . Lixie Brandtner was responsible for the costumes.
