The enchanted Marie (original title: Russian Марья-искусница , Marja-iskusniza ) is a Soviet fairy tale film by Alexander Rou from 1960.

action

A soldier returns to his home country and plays a song on his drum. Two young bears appear and ask him to free their grandfather trapped in an iron. In fact, Grandfather Bear's paw is stuck in a strange beak that the soldier looks at in amazement. The bears tell him that they have not gone into the nearby forest for a long time because there are eerie creatures. The soldier wants to know more and enters the forest, which is deadly quiet. Here he finds the sleeping boy Vanya, who is looking for his mother Marie. She was kidnapped by the evil water spirit because she can embroider works of art. When the soldier announces that he wants to take up the fight against the water spirit, it appears in front of him and the boy. Both ask him to give Marie back and the water spirit agrees, if he can have the soldier's drum for it, he detests any noise. The soldier agrees to give him the drum after the water spirit has brought it to Marie. He takes you into his realm.

Under the earth and under water, the water spirit leads the soldier and Vanya into his water castle. Marie, who longs for her son, has meanwhile been bewitched by the bad weather aunt, so that she loses all interest in her surroundings and would not recognize her son either. The water spirit first tries to exchange the soldier's drum for one of his servants or for a lot of gold and money, but the soldier remains steadfast through Wanja's influence. Meanwhile, the granddaughter of the water spirit Alyonushka has found out about the visit and believes that the visitors are angry. Under the influence of her grandfather, she leads Marie to a magic lake and increases it sixfold. All six Maries finally appear in front of the soldier and Vanya. Only now does Alyonushka realize that Marie is Wanya's mother. Vanya has to find the real Marie in an exam and Alyonushka helps him: Only Marie, who radiates warmth, is the real one. Vanya chooses correctly, but the water spirit now incites all the servants into the group, and the soldier, Vanya and Marie flee back to earth - Alyonushka joins them. Together they reach Marie's house and the water spirit and the storm aunt try one last time to defeat the group. When the water spirit tries to pull Vanya into a well and Vanya yells for help, Marie wakes up from her enchantment and saves Vanya. The water spirit is pulled out of the well and disappears into a small puddle. The storm aunt is also destroyed when the sun comes out. She transforms into a crow, which is soon eaten by a cat. Marie takes Alyonushka into her small family. The soldier, however, sets off to invite the people of the area to a big celebration at Marie's.
