Dieter Wagner (publisher)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dieter Wagner (* 1941 ; † 2004 in Berlin ) was a German printer , book designer and publisher . He is the founder of the small bibliophile publisher Edition Dieter Wagner , Berlin.

Life

Dieter Wagner was a trained printer. In the early 1960s, new printing techniques emerged (e.g. offset printing ). The old lead letters had become superfluous and were lying around in the factory yards for collection by scrap dealers or the garbage disposal. In addition, there were scraps of paper and waste . From 1963 he began to collect what was suitable and to experiment with it after work. In 1971 (?) He came to West Berlin , where he met the legendary Victor Otto Stomps , who almost exactly 40 years earlier had also published very original printed works from printer waste and unusual materials. (However, Stomps died in 1970.)

In Berlin, Wagner was in charge of the editions of the APO publishing house Oberbaum-Verlag , which he gave an attractive appearance. From 1979 he worked as an offset assembler in the Gerike printing company, which from 1980 supported him in publishing his own books in small editions.

In addition to Vauo Stomps, the printing experiments of Hendrik Nicolaas Werkman and Franz Mon were his role models. In 1985 the city of Mainz awarded him the prestigious Victor Otto Stomps Prize . By 1989 (Spindler's editorial deadline) 30 originally designed books had been published in small editions. The FU library in Berlin , the Frankfurt University Library, the Klingspor Museum in Offenbach am Main , the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris , the Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry in Miami Beach and the Mainz Minipressen Archive have complete or almost complete collections of the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz.
