Extraction and presentation

Diethyl sulfide is obtained by reacting ethanol with concentrated sulfuric acid and partially neutralizing the resulting solution with sodium carbonate and then distilling off sodium ethyl sulfate in a solution containing magnesium sulfide .

Diethyl sulfide is a highly flammable, volatile, colorless liquid with a garlic-like odor. It decomposes in water and heat, producing sulfur oxides , carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide .

use

Diethyl sulfide is used as a solvent for minerals and in coating baths for gold and silver .
