Dillard's is a United States retail company headquartered in Little Rock , Arkansas .

The company is listed in the S&P 500 and operated a total of 308 department stores in 2010 under the name Dillard’s in 29 states of the USA . Of these, 240 stores were owned by the company, the remaining buildings / land were rented from third parties. The Dillard's range largely concentrates on clothing and accessories for women, men and children in the mid-price and branded segment, as well as cosmetics , jewelry , household goods, food and furniture .

The company was founded in 1938 by William Dillard (1914-2002) in Nashville, Arkansas . Additional department store branches have been established over the years. The first store within a mall opened in Austin, Texas in 1964. The IPO in 1969 was followed by a period of expansion with numerous new openings or acquisitions of department stores. The locations of the department stores are concentrated in the states of Texas and Florida . Other locations are in Arizona , Iowa , Kansas , Missouri , Alabama , Georgia , Tennessee , Oklahoma , Mississippi , Louisiana , Nevada , North Carolina , South Carolina , Kentucky , Indiana and Ohio . In 1994 William Dillard retired from the company as CEO at the age of eighty ; he was followed by his son William Dillard II. Other Dillard family members sit on the company's board of directors . In 1998, the US retail company Mercantile Stores was acquired. The company also operates an online shop for the US market.

Dillard's sales for fiscal 2010 were $ 6.12 billion with net income of approximately $ 180 million.

Dillard's main competitors are companies such as Macy’s , Lord & Taylor , Belk and Kohl’s or Kmart , Target and Wal-Mart .
