The Dinkel river is an 89 km long tributary of the Vechte that flows from Germany to the Netherlands and then back to Germany. It is not identical to the Dinkel brook in the Vechta district , after which the city of Dinklage is named.

geography

River course

The Dinkel rises in North Rhine-Westphalia in the western Münsterland in the Coesfeld district between Ahaus and Coesfeld in the municipality of Rosendahl . There their source is in the district of Holtwick, 2 km south of the village center.

From a height of around 80  m it flows from there first west-southwest in the direction of Gescher - where it forms the municipal boundary of Rosendahl for around 3 km - as well as the A 31 and then parallel to this in a northerly direction to Legden and Heek . After crossing under the federal highway, it reaches Gronau a little further northwest . In the Gronau urban area, it was straightened several times, especially for the purposes of the local textile companies . Behind Gronau, the Dinkel crosses the German-Dutch border, flows unevenly through a charming landscape in the area of the municipalities of Losser and Denekamp and returns to the north-east of Ootmarsum on German territory, in the Lower County of Bentheim in Lower Saxony . It flows into the Vechte on the northern outskirts of Neuenhaus .
