Life

The family living in Brazil as Swiss abroad returned to Switzerland in 1901. She settled in Stein am Rhein , where Diogo went to school. After training at teacher training college of Rorschach Diogo Graf was initially a teacher at various st. Gallic places and from 1929 to 1961 in the city of St. Gallen. As an autodidact, he painted in his free time and on vacation . As an adult educator , he taught painting and sculpture . A daughter emerged from the marriage with Nelly Kirchhofer. From 1929 to 1933 Diogo Graf trained with Alfred Staerkle , Wilhelm Meier and Fritz Gilsi at the School of Applied Arts in St. Gallen. Representative pictures and sculptures were created during these years. In 1938 he switched to abstract painting. Not understood because he was ahead of his time and thus misunderstood, he was repeatedly denied admission to the Society of Swiss Painters, Sculptors and Architects (GSMBA). Since 1942 (until 1954) a member of the artist group allianz , he turned to tachistic painting with touches on the landscape and Lake Constance. The preoccupation with children's drawings fertilized his work. In the late 1950s, light colored geometric pictures were created. Later he painted tachistically again, in shades of gray, then in the darkest color and finally in lightened colors on a dark background. He worked with a spatula and a soft brush , on wood and canvas . Diogo Graf has created an extensive work. His written estate and children's drawings are in the St. Gallen Cantonal Library (Vadiana) . Works by Diogo Graf can be found in the St. Gallen Art Museum and the Thurgau Art Museum ( Kartause Ittingen ).
