The dipteronia ( Dipteronia ) constitute a genus within the family of the soap tree plants (Sapindaceae). Only two species are known from China . Dipteronia sinensis is used as an ornamental plant in the temperate latitudes .

description

The Dipteronia species are deciduous, large shrubs to small trees that can reach a height of around 10 to 15 meters. The winter buds are bare, small, and egg-shaped. The leaves are pinnate unpaired.

The flowers are arranged in lateral or terminal inflorescences . The flowers are five-fold, with five sepals and five petals each . Dipteronia species are Andromonöz ; There are different types of flowers on a tree: purely male flowers with eight stamens and hermaphrodite flowers, but these are functionally either male or female. The ovary is bicameral. The flat wing nuts (samara) are, in contrast to the maple fruits, which are winged on one side, have broad wings all around.

Systematics

The genus Dipteronia was established in 1898 by Daniel Oliver in Hooker's Icones plantarum Volume 19. The generic name Dipteronia is derived from the Greek words dis for twice and pterón for wing.

The genus Dipteronia was previously placed in the maple family (Aceraceae) together with the maple genus ( Acer ) .

There are only two species of Dipteronia :

  • Dipteronia dyeriana Henry ( Syn. : Dipteronia sinensis subsp. Dyerana (Henry) AEMurray ): It grows in forests at altitudes from 2,000 to 2,500 meters in the southeastern Yunnan . This species is grown as an ornamental plant and for oil production.
  • Dipteronia ( Dipteronia sinensis Oliv. ): It thrives in mixed forests or on the edge of the forest at altitudes between 1000 and 2400 meters in southeastern Gansu , northern Guizhou , southwestern Henan , western Hubei , Hunan , Shaanxi , southern Shanxi and eastern Sichuan .
