Disobey ( . Engl disobedience ) is the first studio album of American metalcore - band Bad Wolves . The album was released on May 11, 2018 via Eleven Seven Music .

Emergence

Drummer John Boecklin has been working on the music for the debut album since 2015. In the summer of 2016 he recorded his first demos at Audiohammer Studios in Orlando . After the line-up was completed with singer Tommy Vext , guitarists Chris Cain and Doc Coyle and bassist Kyle Konkiel, the rest of the recordings took place. These took place in the Hideout Studios in Las Vegas , Sparrow Sound Studios in Los Angeles and the Purple Skull Studios in Stockholm .

The album contains the song Zombie, a cover version of a song by the Irish band The Cranberries . Their singer Dolores O'Riordan was supposed to appear as a guest singer, but died on the planned recording day in London . The contact to O'Riordan was established by Allen Kovac, the owner of the record label Eleven Seven. Kovac had previously worked as the manager of the cranberries for years. According to singer Tommy Vext, the band had initially prepared for their version of the song to "disappear in the drawer" after O'Riordan's death. After discussions with O'Riordan's families, an agreement was reached that the song would be released anyway and that all proceeds go to O'Riordan's children.

In the song Hear Me Now is Diamante be heard as guest vocalist. Music videos have been released for the songs Learn to Live , Zombie , Hear Me Now , Remember When, and No Masters . The LP version of the album contains the three songs I Swear , Blood `N` Bone and Pacifico as a bonus .

Officer Down deals with police violence and racism in the United States. With the song Learn to Live , singer Tommy Vext wants to ask the listener whether he is willing to take responsibility for his own happiness. The song is meant to address depression , anxiety, and disengagement from interpersonal relationships as a by-product of social media addiction . Regarding the cover version of the song Zombie , Tommy Vext said that Dolores O'Riordan's lyrics were "as relevant today as they were in 1994" when the original was released.

“From terrorist attacks in Europe to the situation in the Middle East to gun violence in the United States . All of these tragedies have one thing in common: the collateral damage to innocent human life. "

- Tommy Vext

The song Remember When is about an incident in 2010 when Tommy Vext was nearly murdered by his drugged twin brother in a burglary . To testify against him as a witness was “definitely one of the most difficult moments in his life” for Vext. Tommy Vext's twin brother was sentenced to 17 years in prison for attempted murder . According to Vext, the song is about our struggles against addiction , abandonment and violence . Toast to the Ghost is an open letter to a person who abuses his partner in the relationship , according to Vext .

Reviews

Matthias Weckmann wrote that on the album you “notice every second that scene veterans are at work here”. Bad Wolves "use the entire spectrum of modern metal". As “the mass of hits is still missing”, Weckmann spoke of a “promising start for a good band” and awarded five out of seven points. Pascal Staub from the online magazine Stormbringer criticized the fact that the album “often cannot decide what it wants to be and therefore in some places sounds as if it wants to serve as many tastes as possible”. Disobey would be “solid to good, but also not anymore, which is a bit of a shame in view of the actors involved, whose mindsets in my opinion are here and there too focused on courtesy”. Dust awarded three out of five points.
