The Huaranchal District is located in the Otuzco Province in the La Libertad region in western Peru . The district was established on December 17, 1866. It has an area of ​​135 km². The 2017 census counted 4225 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 5087, in 2007 5087. The district administration is located in the 2180  m high village of Huaranchal with 1144 inhabitants (as of 2017). Huaranchal is located 27 km north-northeast of the provincial capital Otuzco .

Geographical location

The Huaranchal District is located in the northeast of the Otuzco Province. The rivers Río Huaranchal and Río Chicama (in the upper reaches of the Rio Grande) run west along the southern district boundary .

The Huaranchal district borders in the southwest on the Otuzco district , in the north on the districts Lucma and Sayapullo (both in the province Gran Chimú ), in the northeast on the district Cachachi ( province Cajabamba ) and in the south on the districts Usquil and Charat .
