The district of San Mateo is located in the Huarochirí province of the Lima region in the central west of Peru . The district has an area of 425.6 km². At the 2017 census there were 4,245 inhabitants in the district. In 1993 the population was 5084, in 2007 it was 5280. The district administration is located in the small town of San Mateo (also San Mateo de Huánchor ) with 3669 inhabitants (as of 2017) at an altitude of 3149 m .
Geographical location
The San Mateo District is located in the central east of the Huarochirí Province. It is located on the western flank of the Peruvian Western Cordillera on the river bank of the Río Rímac , which flows to the southwest, and includes the headwaters of the Río Blanco, a left tributary, and the Yuracmayo dam built there . The city of San Mateo is located about 14 km northeast of the provincial capital Matucana .
The district of San Mateo is bordered to the west by the district of Matucana , to the north by the district of Carampoma , to the northeast by the district of Chicla , to the southeast by the districts of Yauli and Suitucancha (both in the province of Yauli ) and to the south by the districts of San Lorenzo de Quinti , San Juan de Tantaranche , Huarochirí and San Damián .
