The Tambo district is located in the La Mar province in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district has an area of 303 km². The 2017 census counted 10,667 residents. In 1993 the population was 11,866, in 2007 17,637. The district administration is located in the small town of Tambo, 3219 m high, with 4052 inhabitants (as of 2017). Tambo is 8 km north-northwest of the provincial capital San Miguel .
Geographical location
The Tambo district is located in the Peruvian Central Cordillera in the northwest of the La Mar province. The area is drained southwards via the Río Torobamba .
The Tambo district is bordered to the southeast by the Santa Rosa district , to the west and northwest by the Uchuraccay and Sivia districts (both in the Huamanga province ) and to the northeast by the Pichari and Kimbiri districts (both in the La Convención province ).
