Domfront is a town and commune Déléguée in the French community Domfront en Poiraie with 3,459 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Orne in the region of Normandy .
With effect from January 1, 2016, the former municipalities of Domfront , La Haute-Chapelle and Rouellé were merged into a Commune nouvelle called Domfront en Poiraie , which have the status of a Commune déléguée in the new municipality . The administrative headquarters are in Domfront. The municipality of Domfront belonged to the Arrondissement of Alençon and the canton of Domfront .
geography
Domfront is located in the west of the department on a rock rising 70 meters above the Varenne river . In Domfront the N176 (west-east), D962 (north-south), D21 (NW-SO) and D22 (NE-SW) cross. The following roads also reach Domfront: D908 (from the east), D217 (from the west). The distance to Paris is 250 kilometers. The nearest large towns are Rennes , Le Mans and Caen .
history
Domfront was founded by Norman dukes in the 11th century. In the course of time the place was provided with one of the most powerful fortresses in Europe.
economy
The economy of the place is primarily shaped by tourism. In addition, a third of the residents work in six large companies that have settled in Domfort.
Culture
Domfront has a theater with 900 seats. There is also a cultural center and numerous clubs. Two multi-purpose halls and a stadium with 500 seats are available for sports.
