Donald Runnicles

Donald C. Runnicles (born November 16, 1954 in Edinburgh ) is a British conductor .

Life

Runnicles studied in Edinburgh and Cambridge and began his musical career in 1980 as a répétiteur in Mannheim. He worked as an assistant at the Bayreuth Festival and as a guest conductor with various European orchestras. From 1989 to 1993 he was general music director of the Philharmonic Orchestra in Freiburg .

After briefly taking on a performance of Berg's Lulu at the Metropolitan Opera in 1988 and conducting two performances of Wagner's Ring des Nibelungen there in 1990 , he became Music Director of the San Francisco Opera in 1992 and remained in this position until 2009. In addition to works by Mozart and Strauss and Wagner he conducted here a. a. the North American premieres of Tippett's King Priam and Messiaen's Saint François d'Assise; and the premieres of Conrad Susa's Dangerous Liaisons and John Adams ' Doctor Atomic .

In 1991 he directed the performance of Mozart's opera Don Giovanni at the Glyndebourne Festival on the 200th anniversary of his death. He has been a regular guest at the Edinburgh Festival since 1993. He conducted a. a. the BBC Symphony Orchestra , the NDR Symphony Orchestra , the Israel Symphonic, the Munich and Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Concertgebouw Orchestra . He conducted at the Bayreuth Festival, the Proms in London and the Salzburg Festival , where he a. a. Erich Wolfgang Korngolds performed The Dead City . At the Vienna State Opera he conducted Wagner's Ring des Nibelungen for several years and in 2001 the Vienna premiere of Britten's Billy Budd .

Runnicles is also principal guest conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and, since 2006, music director of the Grand Teton Music Festival in Wyoming. From 2001 to 2006 he was principal conductor of the New York Orchestra of St. Luke’s .

From 2009 to 2016 he was chief conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra . Since 2009 he has been the general music director of the Deutsche Oper in Berlin.

In 2004 Runnicles was awarded the Order of the British Empire .
