action

Major farmer Jacob Greizinger and the tailor Huckebein are at odds. The tailor, who is in constant need of money, owes Greizinger 100 marks. The farmer secretly hopes that the tailor will not be able to repay him the 100 marks, because then his house would be foreclosed. Greizinger senses a nice business. It also doesn't help that Greizinger's son Andreas asks his father for mercy for Huckebein. There is a good reason for his intervention, because Greizinger junior is in love with Huckebein's daughter Evi.

One day Greizinger is turned on a false 100-mark note, then a council meeting does not go his way, and finally his vest was so damaged during the last boozy get-together that he has to be taken to the tailor. When Huckebein finds the wrong bank note, he struggles with himself, but only briefly. Then, a little intoxicated, he puts the banknote back in his vest, but in the wrong one, because his journeyman Franzl and Huckebein's wife have meanwhile tidied up the workshop a little and put the dance teacher Sonnweber's suit that needs to be mended in place of Greizinger's vest.

When Sonnweber learns from Franzl how financially clumsy the Huckebeins are, he gives them back the hundreds he had discovered, beaming with joy, and some good advice on top of that. When Greizinger appears in the hope of finally being able to steal the house from Huckebein, he is indignant when the tailor gives him the wrong hundred (which he doesn't know is actually his fake hundred) as a repayment. Greizinger's displeasure gives Huckebein's journeymen an idea. You'd really have to wipe out the big farmer. And he suggests to his master that Greizinger should be told that iodine water had been found on Huckebein's property, with which one could do a big business and that the neighboring community of Altenbrunn had already brought new prosperity. To prove the find, Franzl pushes a bottle of iodine water into the hand of the large farmer ... allegedly directly from a spring on Huckebein's property.

Greizinger is suddenly incredibly friendly towards his old adversary. He even gives him back the 100 Reichsmarks and finally asks him if he would like to sell his property to him. Under the influence of alcohol, Greizinger had himself sold up to 10,000 Reichsmarks when his assistant Franzl began to feel a little guilty and he wanted to prevent the sale at the last second. But the deal is already wrapped up. When Greizinger later learns from a commissioned chemist that he has been tricked, he wants to reverse the deal. During a happy binge with his new "friend" Huckebein, Greizinger yells at the tailor: The tailor is a fraud and he will drag him to court. Now Greizinger doesn't even want to foot the bill for the fraternization that has just ended abruptly, and Schneider Huckebein has no choice but to settle the champagne feast out of his own pocket - with the returned, false hundred-mark note.

After a constant change of ownership, the flower flies open and Huckebein has to spend the night in a prison cell. The next day the Huckebein family, Franzl and Mr. Sonnweber were questioned by the police superintendent on this matter. Huckbein's innocence soon becomes apparent. Meanwhile, Franzl intercepts the chemist who is on his way to see Farmer Greizinger with good news. From him he learns that instead of iodine, a ferrous vein was found on Huckebein's former property in soil samples. Franzl sends the chemist to a café and secretly informs his master that his ex-property actually contains a valuable mineral. He should definitely comply with Greizinger's repurchase request! As a condition, however, the tailor made the farmer agree to an engagement between his son Andreas and the tailor's daughter Evi. It comes to business.

The upcoming marriage is celebrated at the evening summer ball, when the chemist intervenes. Beaming with joy, he explains to his client Greizinger that the property that he had acquired so cheaply is worth a good 100,000 Reichsmarks instead of 10,000. Greizinger is furious, and the Huckebein family of tailors has been restructured once and for all.

Production notes

The film was shot in August and September 1936 in the Terra Film studio in Marienfelde . At the premiere, the film was banned from young people.

It was the second collaboration between director Engels and the comedian duo Valentin / Karlstadt on a full-length feature film of the past twelve months. The two Bavarian thoroughbred comedians had already appeared in Engels' Kirschen in the neighboring garden in autumn 1935 .

Hans Leibelt , who is his opponent in Donner, Blitz und Sonnenschein , played with Valentin as early as 1922 in the grotesque short silent film Mysteries of a Hairdressing Salon .

criticism

The lexicon of the international film wrote: "Harmless peasant swaying after the play" The Hundred in the Westentaschl "by Neal and Ferner, which through Valentin's great subtle-destructive comedy, duly highlighted by Erich Engels, became a highlight of its genre."

In Bavarian television the film was described as a "rough farce".

In cinema.de it says: "Harmless, but subtle" Valentiads "."
