Board areas

The topics in which eco is active are assigned to the four board areas, for each of which a member of the board is responsible. The content-related work or preliminary work is carried out, among other things, by the competence groups, which are organized by a competence group leader with the support of the eco office.

Politics, Law and Regulation

The Politics, Law and Regulation division of eco accompanies, analyzes, controls and evaluates network policy - at national, European and international level and is responsible for representing the interests of the internet industry in relation to politics, ministries and in legislative processes. It actively promotes self-regulation on the Internet and - supported by the eco complaints office - combats illegal content, especially content that is harmful to minors. The content-related work is mainly carried out via the capital city office of eco and is divided into the following subject areas:

  • Law and Regulation - The Law & Regulation competence group creates an information platform for current legal and regulatory issues at federal, state and EU level. It serves to coordinate the lobbying work and the exchange between the members. Through the association, the members are given the opportunity at an early stage to actively participate in legislation and thus participate in shaping the future of network policy.
  • Internet Governance - The core of the international debates and disputes about Internet governance is the question of who has the supervisory function over central resources for the operation of the global Internet. A multi-stakeholder approach has been established in which different committees feel responsible for different areas of the Internet. eco is therefore active in various international bodies in order to constantly advance and help shape the topic of Internet governance.
  • Protection of minors - The topic of protection of minors has been an important issue for eco since 1996. At that time the Internet Content Task Force (ICTF) was founded with the aim of preventing the distribution of illegal and youth-endangering content on the Internet. From this the eco complaints office for illegal content has developed, which has been operated by eco for over 15 years. Since 2004, the complaints office can also be reached via the web portal internet-beschwerdestelle.de, which is operated jointly with the Voluntary Self-Control Multimedia (FSM), and since 2008 it has also been part of the German Safer Internet Center. The protection of minors on the Internet is more than just running an Internet complaints office. Therefore eco is involved in various national and international bodies on the subject of youth protection and supports projects that promote media skills for children and young people.
