Eduard Ritter von Engerth (born May 13, 1818 in Pleß, then Prussian Silesia , today Pszczyna , Poland , † July 28, 1897 in Semmering , Lower Austria ) was an Austrian history and genre painter .

biography

Eduard Engerth was the son of a painter and the brother of the railway and mechanical engineer Wilhelm Freiherr von Engerth . He received his first lessons from his father. Later he became a student of Leopold Kupelwieser at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, whose grand prize he received in 1845 for a historical painting. A scholarship (then called a pension) enabled him to undertake extensive study trips to Italy , France , England and the Orient in 1847 . He painted his first significant picture in Rome : The arrest of King Manfred's family after the Battle of Benevento , most recently in the Imperial and Royal Belvedere.

In 1854 he became director of the Art Academy in Prague, where his artistic focus was portrait painting. In addition, he completed the frescoes he had begun in the Altlerchenfeld parish church according to his own compositions and those of the presbytery based on Joseph von Führich's compositions. Engerth created numerous portraits and portraits of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth .

In 1865 he became a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna on Schillerplatz. It was here that his second major work, Sieg des Prince Eugen bei Zenta, was written . In 1868 he painted the frescoes Marriage of Figaro and Coronation of Emperor Franz Josef as King of Hungary in the newly built Vienna Court Opera .

In 1871 he became director of the Imperial and Royal Gemäldegalerie in the Belvedere , after 1890 in the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna, and in 1882 published a very thorough catalog of the same. He was buried at the Hietzingen cemetery .
