Eduard Schweizer (theologian)

Eduard Schweizer (born April 18, 1913 in Basel , † June 27, 2006 in Zurich ) was a Swiss theologian. He was a professor for the New Testament at the University of Zurich .

Life

Eduard Schweizer studied Protestant theology with Rudolf Bultmann in Marburg , Emil Brunner and Gottlob Schrenk in Zurich and Karl Barth in Basel . He completed his studies in Basel in 1938 with a doctorate to become a Dr. theol. Afterwards Schweizer was pastor in Nesslau in the canton of St. Gallen for almost a decade . From 1941 onwards, Schweizer also taught as a private lecturer in the New Testament at the University of Zurich. In 1946 he was finally appointed professor for the New Testament in Mainz , but switched to the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn in the summer semester of 1949 . From the winter semester of 1949/50 until his retirement in 1979 he was full professor for the New Testament at the University of Zurich, of which he was also rector from 1964 to 1966.

In 1982 Schweizer was honored with the Sexau Community Prize for Theology .

His students include Hans-Peter Hasenfratz , Ulrich Luz and Hans Weder .
