Edward Follansbee Noyes (born October 3, 1832 in Haverhill , Essex County , Massachusetts , †  September 4, 1890 in Cincinnati , Ohio ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ) and from 1872 to 1874 the 30th  governor of the state of Ohio.

Early Years and Advancement in Ohio

After the early death of his parents, Edward Noyes grew up with his grandfather in New Hampshire . There he learned the printing trade. Until 1857 he attended Dartmouth College . After moving to Cincinnati, Ohio, he studied law at the local law school . Upon graduation, he was admitted to the Ohio bar.

During the civil war he put together a volunteer regiment and served first as a major and later as a colonel in this unit. He was badly wounded in the Battle of Ruff's Mills on July 4, 1864. After the war ended, he was an attorney for the city of Cincinnati from 1865 to 1866. In 1866 he became a probate judge in Hamilton County . In 1871 he was elected governor of his state with 51.8 percent of the vote against the Democrat George Wythe McCook .

Governor and Ambassador

Noyes took up his new office on January 8, 1872. During his tenure, the electoral laws were improved, the pardon system reformed and the safety regulations in the mining sector tightened. In the second phase of his term in office, the state was hit by an economic crisis . The repercussions of this crisis and intra-party problems for Republicans were the reasons for Noyes' defeat by William Allen in the 1873 gubernatorial elections.

After the end of his governorship on January 12, 1874, Noyes temporarily withdrew from politics. In 1876 he supported Rutherford B. Hayes' presidential campaign . In gratitude, the latter named him after his election victory as the successor to Elihu B. Washburne as the United States Ambassador to France . He held this office from 1877 to 1881. He then became a lawyer again in Cincinnati. From 1889 until his death in 1890 he was a judge in a court in his hometown. Edward Noyes was married with one child.
