Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. (born November 30, 1918 in New York - † May 2, 2014 in Solvang , California ) was an American actor .

Life

The son of world-famous parents at the time, the concert violinist Efrem Zimbalist (1889–1985) and the Romanian-Jewish opera singer Alma Gluck (1884–1938), came from a culturally influenced family and quickly found pleasure in acting. He studied at the Yale School of Drama until graduating in 1940 . He then did military service in World War II . In 1945 he got his first Broadway role in the play The Rugged Path alongside Spencer Tracy , followed by other theater engagements, including in classic plays with the American Repertory Theater. In the 1940s he was also successful as a producer of operas and musicals on Broadway, for example with Gian Carlo Menotti's Das Telefon or Die Liebe zu threes and The Consul .

After the death of his first wife Emily in 1950, with whom he has children Efrem Zimbalist III and Nancy Zimbalist, and a subsequent hiatus as an actor, he returned to acting in the mid-1950s and earned himself as "Stu Bailey" on the television series 77 Sunset Strip (1958–1964) and well known as "Lewis Erskine" in the FBI series (1965–1974). He subsequently appeared frequently in films and series, including in the movies Weeping for the Damned (1957) with Clark Gable , Wait Until It's Dark (1967) with Audrey Hepburn and Hot Shots! (1991) with Lloyd Bridges and the television series Remington Steele (1983-1987), in which his daughter Stephanie Zimbalist played a leading role, and Babylon 5 (1997). He was also heard as a spokesman for cartoon characters, such as “Dr. Octopus ”in Spider-Man (1997) and as“ Alfred Pennyworth ”in Batman (1993–1994 and 1998).

From 1956 he was married to Stephanie Spaulding Zimbalist for the second time. She died of lung cancer in 2007 at the age of 73 . The daughter Stephanie Zimbalist (* 1956), who also became an actress, emerged from their marriage .

He was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame . In 2003 his autobiography My Dinner of Herbs was published .
