action

Three days before the blessing of the young sister Hilde, who wants to become a Protestant nun in the Ilmenbeck Abbey, Abbess Elisabeth takes a stand against her. Hilde had spent the night with a friend who was not doing well and so, despite her Christian love of neighbor, broke the rules of the monastery. The abbess's no would prevent the consecration.

Not far from the monastery, Harry Berg and Paul Keller arrive on their motorcycles. Both grew up as brothers, even when Harry was adopted. They went to America in 1958, worked as roadies for various artists and ran small shops. Now they have returned to Germany and Harry is looking for his childhood sweetheart Elli. A friend from back then now works as a pharmacist and helps Harry, who is sick with stomach, with a substitute medication. He tells him that Elli has meanwhile become abbess of a Protestant monastery.

Elisabeth is not happy to see Harry again after all these years. He had left her then out of the blue. Harry defends himself that he wrote letters to her every day for the first few years but never received an answer. The letters went through the intermediary Fred, since Elli's parents were not allowed to know about the correspondence. It turns out that Fred never passed the letters or phone calls on because he loved Elli himself.

There is a break between Elli and Fred, who has lived not far from the monastery since then and leads daily tours for tourists in the monastery in order to be close to Elli. Although Elli knows that she has wronged Harry, she suppresses her feelings. Little does she know that he has advanced stomach cancer and is refusing an operation, so that his visit to her may be his last.

Paul now realizes that Sister Hilde is his great niece. Hilde was abandoned as a baby and had a piece of paper with her that said her name "Schwanhilde". All women in Paul's family have been given this rare name for generations, so that he suspects that the child is the granddaughter of his deceased sister. Hilde is happy to have found a link to her family in him.

Elisabeth finally manages to recognize Hilde's deep connection to God through her confrontation with Harry and her feelings for him. She gives her consent to the blessing.

Harry realizes that Elisabeth wants to get rid of him. He asks her for one final meeting where he takes her to a lake they have often been to as a couple. He received an old film from the pharmacist that he shot with a camera at the time. He is playing this film, which shows Harry and Elisabeth as young people playing boisterous games in the lake. Elisabeth is overwhelmed by her feelings, even if she holds on to her faith. On the day of the blessing, she learns that Fred had reported her to the superior and the superior because she had a relationship with a man, contrary to the rules of the monastery. Harry says goodbye to her, drives indignantly to Fred and beats him up. A little later Harry collapses and is hospitalized. He's got bleeding from his stomach. When questioned by the superior, Elisabeth did not deny that she was with Harry. Now she looks for him in the hospital and tells him that she wants to spend her life by his side. Harry can't change her mind and so she takes off her nun's costume and moves out of the monastery. She managed to get Harry to agree to an operation. However, together they first fulfill a heartfelt wish: They travel to Italy.
