The 2009/10 season of the Austrian ice hockey league will be played with eight teams. The defending champion is ATSE Graz . After only four teams took part in the previous year, this season some former teams came back and some national league teams were new. With the EC Tarco Wölfe Klagenfurt , however, one team also dropped out for financial reasons. Champion became the defending champion ATSE Graz .

Uncertainties in the field of participants

Due to the long-lasting problems in the field of participants in the National League, the participants in the Oberliga were not certain until the end of July 2009. It became known very early on that the former teams EC Wels and the hockey club “Die 48er” would participate again. With the champions of the Salzburg City League, the EC Oilers Salzburg , another team was added. ATSE Graz originally only wanted to take part in the third highest league with a farm team in order to play with the first team in the national league. However, these plans were discarded when the two Styrian national league teams EV Zeltweg and KSV Eishockeyklub (now Kapfenberg Bulls ) began to have financial problems and their participation in the national league was no longer guaranteed. Since all three teams benefit from the spectator income from the derbies, all Styrian representatives now only competed in the top division. In mid-August, however, it became known that the Klagenfurt participant Tarco Wölfe withdrew his nomination, so that in the end eight teams will take part in the league.

mode

First there is a simple round-trip round. In a third first half of the season, the team that is ahead in the ranking or placement after the first first half of the season receives home rights. The final placement after these 21 games in the regular season is determined by the pairings for the playoffs: the first plays against the eighth, the second against the seventh, the third against the sixth and the fourth against the fifth. The better-placed teams have home rights in the first meeting. The playoffs are played from the quarterfinals to the finals in best-of-five mode. The season starts on September 19, 2009, the champions will be determined on March 20, 2010 at the earliest.

Regulations

As in the national league before, the major league clubs decided that from this season three points should be awarded for a win in regular time instead of the previous two. In the event of a tie after regular time, both teams will initially receive one point. The team that wins after extra time or penalty shootout receives a second point. In addition, the number of transfer card players was limited to one. From the 2010/11 season, the league will finally be held as a purely Austrian championship.

Basic round

The basic round began on September 19, 2009 and ended with the 21st round on January 23, 2010. Similar to the previous year, ATSE Graz dominated the event, which even played a perfect season and did not lose a game on the ice (the only defeat came through criminal verification). After EV Zeltweg had occupied first place in the table in the first rounds, the ATSE took over on the sixth day of play and stayed there until the end of the season. In the course of the season a chasing trio emerged that consisted of the Kapfenberg Bulls, the EC Wels and the EV Zeltweg. This trio was only separated by a few points throughout, but ended up being 18 points behind the ATSE. Behind them, the EHC Linz farm team secured fifth place. The EC Weiz, the "48ers" and above all the Salzburger Oilers had to struggle with problems all the time and could not keep up from the start of the championship. The Oilers set a negative record within the league by receiving an average of more than 7.5 goals per game and barely exceeding the 60 percent mark in penalty killing, with which the promoted team showed that despite all efforts, between the major leagues and the national leagues there is still a big gap. The Oilers also suffered the three biggest defeats of the season: on October 16, the away game in Kapfenberg was lost 0:12, on November 28 the game was lost at ATSE with 0:15, and on December 9, the Oilers were defeated in Catfish with 2:17.

Right at the beginning of the season, three matches had to be penalized due to registration errors among the players involved: the opening game of the EHC Linz against Kapfenberg, which the guests had won 8: 3, was rated 5: 0 in favor of Linz. In the second round, Kapfenberg was awarded a win against the ATSE (score 7: 2 for the ATSE). The Linz team also won another away game against Wels 5-0 (score 3-1 for Linz) at the green table. Shortly after the end of the regular round, the game Zeltweg - Wels from the penultimate round was rated 5: 0 for Zeltweg for similar reasons (score 8: 7 after the fact).

Quarter finals

The quarter-finals began on January 30th, 2010. Three teams could clearly prevail against their competitors with a sweep. The ATSE proved its dominance again and threw the Oilers from Salzburg without a chance with a goal difference of 29: 2 from the competition. Not quite as clear, but nevertheless sovereign, the EV Zeltweg and the EC Wels prevailed, which also remained without defeat. Only the series between the Kapfenberg Bulls and the hockey club “Die 48er” from Vienna, where the respective home team always won and the promoted team could only be determined in the last game, was more balanced. There the Kapfenberg Bulls prevailed confidently.

Semifinals

The semi-finals began on February 24, 2010. As in the quarter-finals, the favorites were able to prevail relatively clearly against their opponents. The Kapfenberg Bulls took the EV Zeltweg out of the competition in three games, whereby the Zeltwegers could only seriously compete with their local rivals in the second encounter on their own ice. Surprisingly, ATSE Graz had more difficulties with EC Wels and even lost the first game in the series after extra time. The two away games were extremely close. Only in the second home game could the reigning champions fully demonstrate their superiority and defeat Wels with a double-digit result.

final

The final series began on March 13, 2010. Here defending champion ATSE Graz prevailed clearly and safely against the Kapfenberg Bulls and won the series after just three games and with a goal difference of 19: 8. With this, the Graz team put the expected end to a season in which only one game was regularly lost on the ice, and thus underlined their dominance in the league. After the promotion to the second division was rejected last year due to the uncertainties described above, the team would like to make use of their right this time.
