competition
In the all-around world championship, there are four distances each. The women run 500, 3000, 1500 and 5000 meters and the men 500, 5000, 1500 and 10,000 meters. Every single distance run is calculated down to 500 m in seconds and added up. The sum gives the total number of points. For the last distance (5000 m women / 10,000 m men) there are only eight participants. Athletes who are among the top 12 in the overall ranking after three distances as well as over the second longest distance (3000 m women / 5000 m men) and also the best placed athletes in the overall ranking or in the individual ranking over the second longest distance will be admitted. The champion is whoever has achieved the lowest total number of points after four courses.
