The Elder Scrolls Online (in German: "The Scrolls of the Ancients Online"; short ESO or TESO ) is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) from ZeniMax Online Studios . The game was released on April 4, 2014 for Windows and Mac OS and for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on June 9, 2015. On June 16, 2020 it was released for Google Stadia .

action

Like the previous games in The Elder Scrolls series, The Elder Scrolls Online is set on the fictional continent of Tamriel. The time of the plot is about 1000 years before the events of the last Skyrim and about 800 years before the games Morrowind and Oblivion .

The player's task is to fight against Molag Bal , a prince of the so-called Daedra , who represent god-like demonic beings in the game world of Elder Scrolls . Molag Bal tries to bring all of Tamriel under his rule. The player joins one of the three alliances in the game in his fight:

  • the Aldmeri Dominion, which includes the High Elves, the Wood Elves and the Khajiit,
  • the Daggerfall Alliance, which includes the Bretons, Redguards and Orcs,
  • the Ebonheart Pact, which includes the Nords, the Dark Elves and the Argonians.

Game elements

Races and classes

Tamriel is populated by ten different races: High Elves (Altmer), Wood Elves (Bosmer), Khajiit, Bretons, Redguards, Orcs (Orsimer), Nords, Dark Elves (Dunmer), Argonians and Imperial. For the time being, the Imperial Edition is only playable for buyers of the Collector's Edition (Imperial Edition). The player must also choose one of four classes: Dragon Knight, Templar, Night Blade or Wizard. With the release of the DLC "The Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowind", the Guardian class was added, but this is reserved for buyers of the DLC. On June 4, 2019, the necromancer was added to the Elsweyr chapter.

Alliance versus Alliance (PvP)

The fighting of the three alliances takes place in the province of Cyrodiil on the continent of Tamriel. The alliances fight for fortresses and positions in Cyrodiil in order to gain control of the province with their capture. The system of three alliances ensures a good balance, as the two inferior alliances can join forces against the dominant force in Cyrodiil. The ultimate goal is to conquer the imperial city in the heart of Cyrodiil. This is initially held by the Daedric prince Molag Bal and later by one of the three alliances. The player who was most active in the fight for the crown of Tamriel will be crowned emperor for a period of time after conquering the imperial city. The battle of the alliances takes place on instanced battlefields with a maximum of 2000 players per instance. The instanced battlefields are officially called Campaigns in Elder Scrolls Online . A campaign can last anywhere from a few days to several years. The players can move freely in Cyrodiil and meet players from the opposing alliances. Large groups of players often meet at strategically crucial positions and fortresses. These key positions can be held by a certain faction and then serve as tactical bases for fast travel and the conquest of further areas. During the battles, 200 players should be shown at the same time.

Player versus Environment (PvE)

The questing should be similar to that in previous titles like Skyrim in order to get the typical Elder Scrolls feeling in an MMORPG. The PvE content is easy to master as a group, but also on your own. There are from the Elder Scrolls known -Play and popular NPC - guilds as the Fighters Guild, Mages Guild, Thieves Guild and the Dark Brotherhood. The Thieves Guild was released on March 7, 2016 for Windows, March 22, 2016 for Xbox One and one day later for PlayStation 4. The Dark Brotherhood was released for May 31 (Windows) and June 14 (Xbox One and PlayStation 4) released.

Skill lines

The skill lines in The Elder Scrolls Online are numerous. So far it is officially known that there will be over 50 skill lines. Each class has three separate skill lines. There are also skill lines for races, weapons, armor, NPC guilds as well as AvA and world skill lines. Furthermore, skills can be "morphed" when a certain level is reached. The ability is improved by one of two available effects.

technology

ZeniMax uses " Megaserver " technology for The Elder Scrolls Online . This means that all players worldwide are split between just two large servers, with each platform having its own mega server. Problems that typically occur when operating highly distributed servers are thus systematically excluded. The megaserver technology automatically creates barriers that assign the player to a specific group of suitable players based on his preferences. The player can specify the preferences in advance so that he can be placed on a level of the mega server together with guildmates and friends if desired.

development

The development of an online game by Bethesda Softworks was officially confirmed for the first time in May 2012. On November 8, 2012, the game developers published a video on YouTube in which they talk about the content and development of the game. Registration for the beta was possible from January 23, 2013 . The closed beta phase of the PC version began on March 26, 2013. For the next-gen consoles , there was initially only a time-exclusive beta phase on the PlayStation 4 . A playable version of The Elder Scrolls Online was first unveiled to the public at Gamescom 2013.

After the release of the console versions for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 was repeatedly postponed, the developer announced on December 24, 2014 that the porting would be completed in 2015. This was published on June 9, 2015.

At the E3 2016 game fair , publisher Bethesda announced that it would remove all content barriers and alliance restrictions on quests for The Elder Scrolls Online with the One Tamriel update . In addition, the dynamic level adjustment from DLC expansions should apply throughout the game so that players of different levels can work together.

Meta-ratings
Metacritic 71/100

The Elder Scrolls Online received mostly positive reviews from the German press. Most gaming sites have given ratings between 80 and 90 percent. The atmosphere of the game world Tamriel and the profound story quests, which are all set to music and build on each other very well, were particularly praised. On the other hand, the testers were rather negative about the initial bugs and some questionable design decisions in the endgame.

GameStar awarded 88% for One Tamriel , 80% for Orsinium , 88% for Morrowind , 84% for Summerset and Murkmire, and 89% for Elsweyr .

"Even if everything does not run smoothly and the balancing act between offline association and online obligation sometimes does not succeed: the trips to Tamriel are really entertaining!"
