overview
In 2016, the People's Republic of China, the USA, India, Russia and Japan were the largest producers of electrical energy , with a share of 24,816 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) in the global electricity generation from public and industrial power plants . Other large producers in Europe are Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy and Spain.
The world's largest energy company, Unified Energy System from Russia, generated 636 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity in its power plants in 2005. In places two to five follow Électricité de France from France (473 TWh), E.ON from Germany (404 TWh), Korea Electric Power from South Korea (294 TWh) and Tepco from Japan (282 TWh).
The use of hydropower has been of great importance for centuries . Hydropower is therefore also referred to as old renewable energy . Since the 1990s, the use of wind , solar energy and biomass in particular has increased sharply around the world (hence new renewable energies). In 2011, China, Brazil and Canada led the way in generating electricity from hydropower. The countries with the highest electricity generation from the new renewable energies were the USA, Germany and China.
In 2011, the largest amount of electrical energy from nuclear power plants was generated in the USA, France and Japan. In Germany, after the Tōhoku earthquake in 2011 on March 11, 2011 in Japan and the resulting nuclear accidents , the nuclear moratorium was initially imposed and then the fundamental decision was made to phase out nuclear power . In 2011, gross electricity generation from nuclear power plants in Germany fell by 23.2 percent to 108.0 TWh. The highest level was achieved in 2001 with 171.3 TWh.
Electric power is referred to as "secondary energy " , and different " primary energies " are used to generate it. In large-scale applications, these are mainly power plants that generate electricity using coal , crude oil , natural gas and uranium , while renewable energies (e.g. water and solar power or geothermal energy ) only play a certain role regionally in comparison.
Electrical power
Production by country
The table compares the countries with the largest gross electricity production and their share of world production in percent. All figures relate to the states within their current borders. The information is in terawatt hours (TWh = trillion watt hours) for public and industrial power plants. Gross electricity production = domestic production + self-consumption of the power plants.
