history

Due to the administrative reforms at the beginning of the 19th century in the Kingdom of Bavaria , the place became part of the rural community Attel , which also includes the districts of Attlerau , Au , Edgarten , Gabersee , Gern , Heberthal , Kobl , Kornberg , Kroit , Limburg , Osterwies , Reisach , Reitmehring , Rottmoos , Seewies , Staudham and Viehhausen belonged. In the course of the municipal regional reform in Bavaria in the 1970s, Elend was incorporated into the city of Wasserburg in 1978, together with most of the municipality of Attel. At the end of the 1980s, Misery had 12 residents.

The place Elend was founded about 1000 years ago. There is an old legend about the name of the place. According to this, a cross swam up the Inn during the plague and shouted “misery oh misery”. Then the place was allegedly spared from the plague. Whether the matter actually happened that way or the name “misery” could also be interpreted differently has not yet been precisely researched. There is at least one cross from this period. Theoretically, there was also the possibility that this would swim upstream, at least for a short time. The small Attel river flows into the mighty Inn right at Elend. Before the barrages were built (the reservoir area of the Wasserburg power station lies before Elend ), the Inn was a wild mountain river with numerous eddies and eddies. In such a vortex at the mouth of the Attel a wooden cross could well have got caught.

This cross made misery a much-visited place of pilgrimage. That is why the cross was erected in what was then probably a larger church. When the foundations of this church were undermined by a devastating flood of the Inn about 200 years ago, it had to be demolished. Today there is a small chapel at this point. The cross has since been on display in the parish church of the former Attel Abbey . The pilgrimage no longer plays a major role for Misery and Attel.

traffic
