Elias Pavlidis , rarely, Helias Pavlidis or Ilias Pavlidis (* 4. May 1978 in Sverdlovsk (since 1991 Yekaterinburg), Soviet Union ) is a retired Greek boxers and participants in the 2004 Olympics in the light heavyweight and the 2008 Olympic Games in the heavyweight division , where he reached fifth place both times.
Boxing career
Pavlidis won the 2001 Trofeo Italia tournament, where he beat Andrij Fedtschuk in the final . In the same year he also won bronze at the Danish Box Open tournament and took part in the World Championships in Northern Ireland , where he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Yevgeny Makarenko .
In 2002 he won bronze at the Strandja Mamorial tournament in Bulgaria and gold at the Acropolis Cup in Greece, where he won against Juha Ruokola, Courtney Fry and Clemente Russo . At the European Championships in Russia in 2002 , he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Viktor Perun.
In 2003 he won bronze at the tournaments Strandja Mamorial, Gee-Bee in Finland and Acropolis Cup, as well as silver at the Ahmet Cömert Tournament in Turkey and the Oil Producing Countries Cup in Russia. At the 2003 World Championships in Thailand he was again defeated in the round of 16 against Yevgeny Makarenko.
In the round of 16 of the 2004 European Championships in Croatia he lost this time to Andrij Fedtschuk, but won the Acropolis Cup with victories against Clemente Russo, Yoan Hernández and Beibit Schümenow . He had thus qualified for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , where he defeated Taylor Mabika and Ali Ismayilov. In the quarterfinals, he finally lost controversially in the fight for entry into the medal ranks by breaking off against Ahmed Ismail . Before the third and final round, Pavlidis was in the lead with 18:12 points before the Indonesian referee had taken Pavlidis out of the fight due to a cut over the left eye. The subsequent protest by the Greek boxing association was rejected by the world association AIBA . Pavlidis thus missed the chance to become the first Greek boxer to win an Olympic medal.
In 2005 he won silver at the Beogradski Pobednik Tournament in Serbia and the Oil Producing Countries Cup in Russia. At the Mediterranean Games in Spain in 2005, he lost to Ramadan Yasser in the round of 16 .
In 2007 he won silver at the Algirdas Socikas Tournament in Lithuania and gold at the EU championships in Ireland . He defeated among others Vedran Đipalo and Con Sheehan . At the World Championships of the same year in the USA , he was eliminated against John M'Bumba .
In 2008 he won silver at the Strandja Memorial, beating Terwel Pulew , among others , and again won the gold medal at the EU championships in Poland . At the European Olympic qualifying tournaments in Italy and Greece, he defeated Con Sheehan, József Darmos, Mihail Muntean, Vitalijus Subačius and Petrișor Gănănău and only lost to Danny Price and Milorad Gajović , against the latter just 3: 4. He was thus qualified for the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 where he succeeded this time in a victory against Milorad Gajović, before losing again in the fight for a medal place with 4-7 against Osmay Acosta .
