The Elisabethkirche is a Protestant church in Limbach in Saarland , a district of the Kirkel community . The church is the parish church of the Protestant parish Limbach-old city in the deanery Homburg the Evangelical Church of the Palatinate . The church is listed as an individual monument in the Saarland's list of monuments .

The church was built around 1250 as a small chapel and for centuries was a branch church of the 9th century mother church of St. Martin in the old village of "Lympach" (today the old town ), which stood in the area of ​​today's cemetery. The chapel emerged from a foundation of Countess Loretta von Saarbrücken and her cousin and feudal husband Johann I von Kirkel and was dedicated to Landgrave Elisabeth of Thuringia , who was canonized in 1235 .

In 1533 the Reformation was introduced in the Duchy of Pfalz-Zweibrücken , to which Limbach belonged at the time .

In the years 1721 to 1725 the nave was rebuilt and in 1771, according to plans by the architect Philipp Heinrich Hellermann, it was extended to the west in the Baroque style, with the entrance portal being moved from the west to the south side. A restoration was carried out in 1826 , during which the war damage to and in the church was removed over time. From 1922 to 1924, the church was restored again, adding a staircase to the west. After the destruction in World War II , it was rebuilt in 1964 according to plans by the architect Erhard Roland (Kirkel-Limbach). Further restoration work took place in 1980 and 2005. The latter under the direction of the architect Gunther Urban Ecker ( Bexbach ).

Furnishing

From the interior of the new building from the 18th century, a bench has been preserved to this day, the side part of which is provided with a carved edge groove. In the course of the restoration measures in 1826, the church received a new pulpit , a gallery in the classicist style, a wooden altar , a parish chair and new benches, which were made according to the pattern of the preserved bench from the 18th century.

In 1846 an organ was built by Carl Wagner (Kirrweiler / Kaiserslautern ). In 1922, a new organ was the organ building company GF Steinmeyer & Co. delivered. The current organ of the church was built in 1968 by the organ builder GF Steinmeyer ( Oettingen in Bavaria ) as opus 2196. The instrument, which is set up on a gallery and has a built-in play cabinet , has 15 registers , divided into 2 manuals and pedal , as well as mechanical sliding drawers .

Bells

The three bells of the church

Since 1955 there have been three bells in the tower of the Elisabethkirche , which hang in different positions on straight steel yokes . They have the disposition f '- as' - c ". The smallest bell was cast by the Pfeiffer foundry ( Kaiserslautern ) in 1923. It was removed during World War II, but returned after the war. Two larger bells were added in 1952 which were cast by the French bell foundry Causard ( Colmar ).
