Etelka Gerster
Etelka Gerster , also Elka Gerster , married Etelka Gerster-Gardini (born June 25, 1855 in Kaschau , Abaúj-Torna county ; † August 20, 1920 in Pontecchio near Bologna , Italy ) was a Hungarian opera singer ( soprano ).
Life
Etelka Gerster, daughter of a factory owner, was discovered and promoted by the composer Michael Hebenstreit . She was a student of Mathilde Marchesi and made her debut in Venice in 1876 as 'Gilda' in Rigoletto . The next stops in her career were London (1877) and New York (1878). She was considered a rival of the opera singer Adelina Patti . There is evidence of appearances in Philadelphia in the years 1879 and 1881 to 1884. On the USA tour in 1878/1879 she sang alongside Italo Campanini in Il Talismano and La traviata . At the end of the tour there was a benefit concert in New York for the benefit of the flood victims in Szeged / Hungary, Gerster's homeland.
She may have lost her singing voice around 1889 as a result of the birth of her daughter Berthe. From 1896 to 1917 she taught singing in Berlin ('Gerster Method').
Elka Gerster, who married the impresario Gardini in 1877, was the mother of two daughters: Elca and Berthe.
