history

In 1900 a line of what was then Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern Railway reached the area around the present-day location. The railroad company buys land from a local farmer to build a new town. The newly established place was named Ellendale after Ellen Dale Ives , the wife of the president of the railway company.

In 1901 the newly founded place was incorporated as an independent municipality. At that time the place had about 200 inhabitants, a post office, several rented stables, a meat market, two grain elevators , a wood store and other businesses. A slaughterhouse was built south of the station.

In 1910 Ellendale already had around 400 residents. A two-story brick school building was built in the same year. In 1922 the building was expanded after several surrounding schools had been merged into one center.

According to the 2010 census , Ellendale had 691 people in 296 households. The population density was 277.5 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.33 people lived in each of the 296 households.
