Robert came to Vienna with his family in 1856 and attended the academic high school there between 1860 and 1865 . After the request of his family, he was supposed to law study, but from 1864 he took private lessons - "dramatic hours" - when the actor Joseph Lewinsky and made by his teacher soon already acquainted with the director of the Burgtheater Heinrich Laube .

After almost two years of lessons with Lewinsky and supported by him, Robert was able to successfully debut on September 6, 1865 in the role of "Ferdinand" at the Aktientheater in Zurich . With effect from May 1, 1866, he then moved to the Hoftheater Stuttgart and from around this time on Robert was affectionately known by his audience as The Beautiful Robert .

The writer Albert Emil Brachvogel saw him there and recommended him to the management of the Berlin Hofschauspielhaus. In August 1867 he was invited to a guest performance there and on June 7 of the following year he made his debut as "Romeo". In the same year he was committed to this theater for life.

In 1872 Robert was brought to the newly founded city theater by Heinrich Laube. When Laube resigned from his line for the first time, Robert also resigned and started an extensive tour of tours. In 1875 Robert returned to the Vienna City Theater almost at the same time as Laube. From there, director Franz von Dingelstedt hired him and took him on for life in the ensemble of the Burgtheater . Robert stayed at the Stadttheater until 1878 and gave his farewell performance on April 1st in the role of " Hamlet ". At the beginning of October of the same year he was seen as "Fiesco" at the Burgtheater.

Robert was last seen on stage on March 7, 1899. Robert tried to alleviate his intestinal ailment, which can no longer be ignored, by taking a spa stay in Bad Kissingen . However, as the condition got worse ( relocation of the intestine ), Emerich Robert, on the advice of the doctors, went to the clinic of the surgeon Andreas Rosenberger in Würzburg. Since the condition was recognized as no longer operable, the operation was not carried out and Robert succumbed to heart failure on May 29, 1899 (one week after his 52nd birthday). The theater critic Anton Lindner wrote a remarkable obituary.

Emerich Robert was buried in Vienna in the Hietzinger Friedhof in an honorary grave (group 19, number 3).
