Emil von Sauer (lawyer)
Emil von Sauer (born April 2, 1889 in Dresden , † January 2, 1967 Hamburg) was a German lawyer and attorney . He was the son of the composer and pianist Emil von Sauer and the first president of the German Lawyers' Association (DAV) after the Second World War .
Von Sauer grew up in Vienna and studied law in Tübingen and Berlin . During his time in Tübingen he became a member of the Hohenstaufia Tübingen gymnastics association . He received his doctorate in Rostock as Dr. iur. After participating in the First World War as an officer, he first worked as a judge and public prosecutor in Hamburg . After being admitted to the bar in 1920, he worked in commercial law , particularly in maritime law. Overall, von Sauer worked as a lawyer for a period of over 40 years, from 1920 to 1967.
Despite his services in the First World War, he received the Iron Cross First Class, from 1933 von Sauer had to experience considerable discrimination and restrictions on his professional activity because of his Jewish mother.
The re-establishment of the DAV was initiated by the Hamburg lawyer. After the Second World War in Hamburg and in the Federal Republic of Germany, he built up and shaped the legal professional organizations. As early as 1946 he called the Hamburg Lawyers Association (HAV) back to life. Two years later, in 1948, Emil von Sauer founded the Federal Association of Liberal Professions . In 1949 he founded the newsletter Die Freie Berufe in Hamburg . In the years that followed, Sauer united the newly founded lawyers' associations in the British zone into a German Northwest Lawyers Association. Later the associations from the American and French zones were added and the German Lawyers Association was formed.
Von Sauer was also involved in founding the first legal journals after the war, the MDR and the NJW .
In 1957 von Sauer received the Great Cross of Merit with Star of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and on August 2, 1960 an honorary doctorate from the University of Hamburg . The German Lawyers' Association appointed him honorary president. In 1973 the Hamburg Lawyers' Association donated the Emil von Sauer Prize ("Der saure Emil") in his honor and as a reminder of his professional activities "is awarded.
