biography

He studied mathematics and law at the University of Tübingen and continued his studies in Paris with Jean Sturm . He was accepted into the cathedral chapter of Bamberg and in 1532 of Strasbourg early on . He was brought to Strasbourg by Sturm and took on tasks in the city's newly established grammar school . In 1541 he was elected bishop there. He was ordained a priest three years later.

During this time, religious tensions increased as a result of the Reformation . In 1540 the Hagenau Religious Discussion took place, which was continued in 1541 by the Worms Religious Discussion and the negotiations in Regensburg . In this context, a religious talk was held in Molsheim on October 18, 1542 , which was intended to clarify the differences in interests between the city representatives and the bishop with his cathedral chapter. The city clergy were represented by Martin Bucer and Hédion, the city council by Pierre Sturtri, Matthis Pfarrer and Martin Herlin. The cathedral chapter had sent the cathedral dean Christoph von Simmern as well as Count Bernhard von Eberstein and his lawyer Tuchelin. Bishop Erasmus took part in the negotiations himself. However, the differences were too great to be able to reach a consensus. Erasmus himself wrote: "Cum praesens schisma ferme totam nostram dioecesim invaserit et ecclesias hinc inde misere contaminaverit et infecerit ..."

Erasmus nevertheless tried to restore spiritual discipline at least in the areas where his rule was still in effect. To this end, he gathered diocesan synods in Saverne in 1549 and 1560. The resolutions of these synods were then published and printed in Mainz in 1566. They contained an extensive reform program that appeared to be an attempt at a counter-reformation. However, the bishop lacked the capable employees to implement these reform approaches.

In 1560 he had the magnificent building known today as Palais Rohan built in Ettenheim . Erasmus Schenk von Limpurg died on November 27, 1568.
