Johann Erdmann Hummel (born September 11, 1769 in Kassel , † October 26, 1852 in Berlin ) was a German painter.

Life

Hummel studied at the art academy in Kassel from 1780 to 1792 . From 1792 to 1799 he stayed in Italy , where he made friends with a number of German landscape painters who turned against the classicist style of Anton Raphael Mengs then prevailing . Artistically he devoted himself mainly to mythological topics in Rome . In 1799 he returned to Kassel for a short time, but shortly afterwards went to Berlin , where, apart from a few shorter trips, he stayed forever. There he worked as an illustrator , made copperplate engravings on Luther's life and painted portraits . What is particularly noticeable in his work is the technical precision and an overemphasis on the perspective design, which earned him the nickname "Perspective Hummel". In 1809 he was appointed professor for perspective, architecture and optics at the Berlin Art Academy . In addition, he joined the lawless society in Berlin in 1813 . In several paintings in 1831 he depicted the granite bowl erected in the Berlin Lustgarten in a precise perspective and taking reflective effects into account . He found his final resting place in Cemetery II of the Sophiengemeinde Berlin , but the grave site is no longer preserved.
