The Erlensee is a 17- hectare body of water in the Bulau Forest and is located in the south of the Langendiebach district of the Hessian city of Erlensee in the Main-Kinzig district, which was named after this body of water when it was founded in 1970.
history
The Erlensee was originally a pit for sand and gravel mining. This ended in 1981 and the pit was filled with water, creating the Erlensee. The quarry pond was used as a swimming lake for a short time, but was later acquired by the local fishing club and has been fished ever since. Three wooded islands in the lake offer an undisturbed refuge for numerous water-loving ground-breeding bird species .
Since 1989 the Erlensee has been part of the 1.93 km² nature reserve Erlensee near Erlensee . In addition to the area of the lake, the nature reserve extends to larger forest and meadow areas east of the lake. The 196 hectare nature reserve serves to protect the meadow landscape of the Kinzig , which flows through near the lake and which is still regularly flooded today.
