Ernst Heinrich von Houwald

Baron Ernst Heinrich von Houwald (born October 23, 1819 in Straupitz , Lübben district ; † February 7, 1891 in Dresden ) was a Prussian major general and most recently commander of the 6th Dragoons Regiment.

Life

origin

He is a descendant of the Prussian general Christoph von Houwald (1602–1663). His parents were Freiherr Karl Heinrich Ferdinand von Houwald (* April 6, 1773 - June 2, 1832) and his second wife, Freiin Johanna Karoline von Thermo (* October 31, 1787; † May 17, 1837). His father was lord of the free class rule Straupitz and district judge of the Margraviate of Niederlausitz . He went to the military with his twin brother Gustav Heinrich von Houwald († January 18, 1856), who died as Rittmeister of the 1st Guard Uhlan Regiment .

Career

He received his school education from 1832 to 1838 at the Knight Academy of Brandenburg . From there he came on April 24, 1838 as a Ulan in the 1st Guard-Ulanen-Landwehr Regiment. On October 20, 1838 he was appointed Portepeefähnrich, aggregated as Seconde-Lieutenant on June 23, 1839, and assigned to May 14, 1840.

From October 1, 1842 to September 30, 1843 he was assigned to the teaching cadron. On January 27, 1847, he received the approval to use the title of baron as agnate of the Fideikommiss Freie Standesherrschaft Straupitz. He was promoted to Premier Lieutenant on November 13, 1851, and Rittmeister on August 13, 1853 . From February 9, 1856 he was appointed squadron chief and promoted to major on October 18, 1861 . On September 22, 1863, he received the Order of the Red Eagle, 4th class, and on June 25, 1864, he was appointed a regular staff officer. During the mobilization for the German War of 1866, he became the commander of the 2nd Landwehr Dragoon Regiment. During the campaign he was appointed commander of the 6th Dragoon Regiment on September 12, 1866 and promoted to lieutenant colonel on September 20, 1866 .

He was appointed Colonel on July 23, 1868 for a patent on July 3, 1868. During the Franco-German War , he fought at Gravelotte , Noisseville , Orleans and Le Mans . During the siege of Metz , he earned the Iron Cross 2nd class . On September 21, 1871, because of his poor health, he said goodbye with the character of major general and a pension. He died in Dresden on February 7, 1891.

family

Houwald married on October 7, 1851 in Lübben the baroness Elise von Patow (born October 29, 1832, † July 27, 1911), a daughter of Bernhard von Patow . The couple had several children:
