Ernst Schwarz (Sinologist)
Ernst Schwarz (born August 6, 1916 in Vienna ; † September 6, 2003 in Münichreith / Waldviertel ) was an Austrian sinologist and translator .
Life
Ernst Schwarz came from a Jewish merchant family from Vienna. His father Desiderius Schwarz and his mother Bertha Schwarz had a shop on Mariahilfer Strasse . He had a brother (Egon, 1904–1976) and two sisters (Lilly, 1908–1972 and Francis, 1909–2000). He studied Egyptology and medicine at the University of Vienna . After the connection of Austria to the German Reich in March 1938, he was forced to leave the country. He and his brother Egon got to Shanghai by sea . There he learned Chinese by self-study while at the same time working as a sports teacher. At times, Schwarz stayed in Buddhist monasteries. In 1945 he worked as a translator in Nanjing ; 1946/1947 he taught English literature at the local university . From 1947 to 1950 he was secretary at the Austrian embassy in Nanjing. He then worked again as a translator, this time for the publishing house for foreign language literature in Beijing . From 1958 to 1960 he taught English at the University of Hangzhou , but was then forced to leave the People's Republic of China because of political problems during the “ Great Leap Forward ” period .
Schwarz finally made it to the GDR via the stations of Great Britain and Belgium . From 1961 to 1970 he taught Chinese language and literature as a research assistant and later as a lecturer at the East Asian Institute of the Humboldt University in East Berlin . In 1965 he received his doctorate in philosophy. After leaving the university, he lived as a freelance translator and occasionally gave lectures at the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna . Federal Chancellor Bruno Kreisky gave him a teaching position at the Diplomatic Academy. He had personal acquaintance with the Minister of Commerce Fritz Bock , a childhood friend, the then Foreign Minister Rudolf Kirchschläger , the Minister of Science Hertha Firnberg , the Minister of Health Ingrid Leodolter , the diplomat Friedrich Hoess and the Magistrate Director Josef Bandion .
In 1993 Schwarz returned to Vienna from Berlin . In 1994 his work for the State Security Service of the GDR became known; Schwarz admitted to this, but without publicly regretting his espionage activities . He retired to Münichreith in the Austrian Waldviertel , where he spent the last years of his life.
Ernst Schwarz was best known for his translations of classical poems and philosophical texts from Chinese , which were well received by the reading public and which set standards in German-speaking countries with regard to Confucius , Lao Tse and Tao Yüan-ming .
The autobiography Thousand Gates Has The Truth , announced for 2001 by a Berlin publisher, has not appeared again.
Ernst Schwarz received the F. C. Weiskopf Prize in 1981 and the Gold Medal of Honor of the Federal Capital Vienna in 1992 .
He is the father of Melan Schwarz aka Marijam Agischewa .
