The Archdiocese of Canton ( Latin Archidioecesis Coamceuvensis ) is in China located Roman Catholic archdiocese, based in Guangzhou .

The forerunner of today's Archdiocese of Canton is the Apostolic Vicariate of Guangdong-Guangxi (Kwangtung-Kuamsi) founded on May 11, 1848 from the Diocese of Macau . It was raised on April 6, 1914 by the Apostolic Vicariate of Guangdong to the Diocese of Guangzhou and on April 11, 1946 to the Archdiocese . It is the metropolis of six suffragan bishops. The bishopric is the city of Guangzhou with the Sacred Heart Cathedral .

The Canton Cathedral

With a circumference of 43,332 km² and 20,346 Catholics, 0.4% of the population, it counted 44 diocesan and 17 religious priests in 1949 . In addition, there were 94 nuns .

The Apostolic Administrator, Bishop Dominic Tang Yee-ming was captured in 1958. He was released in 1981 to undergo necessary cancer treatment in Hong Kong. There he was appointed archbishop in 1981, after which the Chinese government appointed Joseph Ye Yinyun .

Due to the political situation the archdiocese was after the death of the second archbishop on 27. June 1995 , which made Hong Kong originating Jesuits Dominic Tang Yee-ming SJ, the last of the Catholic Roman Church recognized Archbishop until 2007, long time are not occupied.

Nevertheless, other archbishops were appointed by the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association , such as Joseph Ye Yinyun in 1981 . Archbishop Ye was never recognized by the Vatican. His successor Archbishop James Lin Bingliang was recognized in 1998 following the death of Archbishop Tang Yee-ming in 1995. Archbishop Joseph Gan Junqiu , who has been acting since 2007 , received papal recognition before the approval of the Chinese government.
